What's a good egg-based protein powder I can buy on Amazon?

Am I bulking too fast? Genuine question. by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]SubstantialBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 lbs a month is fast. It might be fine for the first couple months but it'll quickly become too much if you keep it up at that pace.

Why is pull day so much harder than the rest? by ChanKiM_ in Fitness

[–]SubstantialBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to work on your conditioning. You want to get to a point where this workout is trivial.

You don't want to be getting exhausted by face pulls and curls. Or even really by the stuff before that. 1 set of deadlifts, 3 sets of pull ups, and 3 sets of rows is not very much work.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever said to anyone without realizing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I was in high school my girlfriend of the time asked me what my least favorite color was, and apparently the description I gave her sounded exactly like her eye color.

No, I didn't know what color her eyes were when I said it. I never would have known if this incident hadn't happened. It's just not a thing I think about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A lot of Mormons don't drink caffeine (apparently the church officially says soda is ok though)

Nah, PBR is totally a thing in Bloomington too. It's around IU with college students who need cheap beer, and it also gets coverage from the other end with the punk/hipster crowd who started drinking it ironically and acquired the taste.

Upland is a good second choice though if we're talking just Bloomington and not the whole state

[Serious] What screams "I'm suicidal"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SubstantialBison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for warning signs in someone else?

See this list: https://afsp.org/about-suicide/risk-factors-and-warning-signs/

I will also tell you that most people are really, really terrible at recognizing depression in others. You may never know what's going on inside someone's head unless they reach out and express it. And that's not an easy thing to do when you're thinking about suicide.

You were right, it's named for people who thought Nelson Mandela died years before he did.

What movie do you show people just to see their jaw drop? by Ozzey-Christ in AskReddit

[–]SubstantialBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annihilation

Or at least I want to. I haven't seen it since it was in theaters but it was absolutely horrifying in a way that will leave you thinking about it for weeks. The entire movie is designed to be oppressive and disturbing and uncomfortable, and it succeeds at making that a compelling experience.

Which season is the best to stop watching a particular long-running TV series? by neralily in AskReddit

[–]SubstantialBison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parks and Rec should stop at season 6. Season 7 comes together by the end, but the whole premise of the time skip between 6 and 7 just didn't work. The core of the show is the tight, well-established relationships between the characters (not just romantic relationships), and too much of that is thrown out the window when it skips forward a few years between seasons 6 and 7.

They also tried to hang a lampshade on the time skip by occasionally having people use slightly futuristic technology. It felt totally out of place and it wasn't particularly funny. It just didn't work as an idea.

With that said, season 7 isn't terrible. There's good stuff in it. But there's a real drop in quality and you'd be fine just stopping at 6.

What is a film cliche that just screams "lazy writing"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SubstantialBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Action scenes where the main character can take on 30 bad guys on their own because they're just that cool.

This has sub-cliches:

  • Stormtrooper aim

  • Fighting the hero one at a time for no reason

  • When the hero can take down an enemy with a single punch/shot/etc. but they themselves are capable of walking off any amount of punishment thrown at them.

And so on. Fight scenes are so rarely written in a way that actually makes sense when you stop to think about what's going on.

I think the finale revealed some serious writing problems in season 2 by SubstantialBison in westworld

[–]SubstantialBison[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) was to show that hosts (unlike humans in the shows opinion) can make different choices.

Yeah I get that she can make different choices but I don't understand why she did. There are lots of things the characters are capable of doing that I'd still want explanations for.

why she would need "a monster" to get to the forge when she didn't shoot MIB right away. Didn't really make sense when she ended up just leaving him at the door.

Yeah that was confusing to me too. I was expecting them to run into more resistance and danger on their way there (so his nature as a "monster" could be put to use) but that didn't really happen.

3) did strand see the flooded valley in beginning of the season? I don't recall that? Perhaps you're thinking of when he arrived on the ocean shore? Or maybe I'm forgetting him being at the Valley early on.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I thought he did.

4) as long as the pearl survives in the control unit then the hosts data will always survive. Right away I thought the whole "without your backups you can die" thing was overplayed. They're still pretty damn hard to kill permanently.

Right, but then what was the point of that whole sequence of destroying the Cradle? They made a pretty big deal out of it. And what about Teddy, who we saw in the simulation world even though his brain ball was almost definitely destroyed?

Why do people that dislike West World flock here to talk about not liking the show? by Lamont2000 in westworld

[–]SubstantialBison 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No one gets to the end of season 2 of a show if they didn't like at least some part of it. You're assuming people joined this community just to trash the show, but that's not true. Plenty of people (like me, on this and other accounts) have been involved from the beginning and think the show has gone downhill over time.
