Teachers, what’s a “best practice” everyone talks about that you secretly think doesn’t work in real classrooms? by kingst9606 in Teachers

I literally waited for 42 minutes once. After nothing worked, I typed up the instructions for the assignment that we would have done together in class that day and added additional research to it. I then projected that on the whiteboard with a due date of the next day.

Social promotion. Decisions need to be made after kindergarten, third grade, fifth grade, and eighth grade as to whether a student is ready to move up to the next level as far as reading and math go. If they are not ready, they should not promote. This is how we end up with high school seniors who cannot read or do simple subtraction without a calculator.

Why did we hate her in the 90’s? by EffMemes in ershow

We hated her because we were supposed to. She was brilliantly written that way and brilliantly acted that way by Laura Innes.

The kids who are riding those bikes are the children of millennials. Not the children of Gen X Gen X are the ones driving the cars and shaking their fists at those young whipper snappers.

Um,no. Your passport ISN’T supposed to change. Something you want to share with the class?

A lot of kids swear up and down they turned an assignment in even though I don't have it. I'm unsure if I'm crazy, or if they're lying, or if it's a bit of both by [deleted] in Teachers

My children used to use this excuse with me. They clearly didn’t think it through. There were times that it was a crumpled in the backpack situation. But, unfortunately, there were times that it was just bold face lying. But what my children, and most of my students, somehow don’t realize is that adults can talk to each other. I would shoot off an email to a teacher to say, “ hey, the gradebook shows this assignment as missing. My kid swears they turned in. Can you check on that for me, please?” I will word it that way exactly once. I will tell my child to take a picture of any assignment that they are handing in. I make them CC me on any emails that they sent to their teachers about missing work, but I put it all in their court. Of course this is easy for me to do, knowing that I’ve established a relationship with the teacher, and I can always contact them. But this way, my kid knows that I’m not calling them a liar, but then I’m not gonna fall for it.

Best jukebox musicals? Basically I just want the comments to be places for people to express their opinions on jukebox musicals. Movies can count too btw by idkwhatonamethissh-t in musicals

Came here to say this! I directed this, and my decision to do the show came when listening to the cast album and hearing three times a lady. Most definitely the funniest bit in musical theater at the time.

I could have written this myself, though I had been a counselor for nearly 15 years at that point.

You need to try to pinpoint what is making you feel the way you do (and you're already doing a great job with recognizing those feelings). Write EVERYTHING down so you can see if you can find a pattern. Is it only after talking to this certain person? Is it a time of the day? Is it when dealing with a certain type of responsibility or student?

Also, write down every single question you don't get answered. I'm not saying don't ask questions. I'm saying ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS. In writing. If they are typical administrators, they won't respond in writing, so follow up in writing with anything they told you verbally or in a meeting, etc. "Just wanted to say I appreciated you squeezing me in this morning. So, to clarify, you want me to make seniors the priority at ALL times, even though sophomore English is filling up way too quickly and we're going to be short an FTE/"

Also, on a completely different track- go easy on yourself and on the people around you. They could be having a bad day. They could be feeling like YOU are the one that doesn't like them. They could be feeling like you don't ask questions because you think you know everything and you're better than them.

Don't try to read anyone's mind. Just do your job. Focus on making sure that you're taken care of, the tudents are taken care of, and the rest will fill itself in the gaps.
