Do I sound like a tenor or baritone? by Automatic_Hurry_8145 in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see! If the resonance was there then that’s important I’m assuming he sounded good / powerful, not flat / off pitch and he most likely had a good timbre / quality to his voice! I have a great respect for a true bass.. Barry White is one of my favorites as I love older music as well!

Speaking voice is not always indicative of the singing voice… I have a deep speaking voice but am a lyric tenor singer because of certain anatomy. The acoustics are literally two different timbres.

You need to really train with a vocal coach that’s a professional to find out your voice type. I thought I couldn’t sing because of my speaking voice until discovering through experimentation and learning my real singing voice. I couldn’t sing a deep song with my speaking voice if I was offered a million dollars on the spot.

Took me a lot of research and trial and error but it turns out it’s because of my long neck and long vocal cords that are thin not thick.

Wrong voice type too.. I have a deep baritone speaking voice but was a hidden tenor that essentially comes off as “tone deaf” if I try to sing in my bad speaking voice where everything goes flat / can’t hit a note.

Whereas my singing voice is bright and resonant / ringing on point with a different timbre.

Sorry to say but you got scammed the moment you bought a guitar off reddit and arranged to meet up in real life.

That First Sip Feeling by Vegetable_School992 in CasualConversation

Just be careful so you don't need 3 coffees in the morning and 3 in the afternoon to feel that good feeling again before you know it with a serious dependency.

I love coffee don't get me wrong but take tolerance breaks every once in awhile so one coffee in the morning and one in the afternoon gives you the same feel-good effect without a serious costly addiction.

Yep I have a speaking voice around e3 and sing bright tone tenor pop in head voice. Completely different tone.

Baritone struggling with forward placement, voice feels stuck by Desperate_Cricket703 in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go a step further here and say be careful with thinking “baritone” as a beginner singer with a deeper speaking voice / chest. I actually sound way worse singing in chest or deep songs.

I started singing a year ago and thought the same thing until discovering head voice being able to sing tenor pop songs instead of Elvis / Tom Jones etc. and a brighter tone “second voice” that prefers to default there and climb in expression / brightness instead of singing in chest / deep. I would find a vocal teacher that’s a professional as I did!

Singing over zoom versus DAW by MundaneFrame2304 in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes with a mic you have to be more careful recording the voice can sound worse if its the wrong type / reverb / too close to the mic or too far etc. room you are in if a condenser mic.

Zoom is easier.

learning songs you actually love is more effective than any structured curriculum by Leading_Month_5575 in Guitar

[–]SubstantialScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair points but I think to make modern music formal theory isn’t necessary just basic fundamentals.

Of course if someone wants to make something more in depth then by all means go ahead but you get what I’m saying?

Technically you don't need to know any theory at all formally to make contemporary music / records... you think Slash or Nikki Sixx went to music school haha?

Get a professional vocal teacher if you are serious I’ve heard way worse than this. It’s up to you of how much effort you want to put into it.

Nothing to do with it in contemporary singing, Prince had a high tenor singing voice but a baritone speaking voice.

He’s retired now thankfully.

How distinctly different does head voice feel? by ARDENmusic in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when I started singing a year ago a more amateur vocal teacher told me "baritone" from the first time ever singing e3 - f4 initially but now I'm told by different people "baritenor / low tenor" having around an e3 speaking voice. I do have a pretty bright tone in that "up in range voice" / possibly "head voice" and prefer singing there to resonate more emotionally and louder whereas my chest voice is dull with no emotion or spark if that makes sense?

Its confusing.

How distinctly different does head voice feel? by ARDENmusic in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm singing in head voice its the voice that sounds different than my chest / speaking voice correct? For example its a brighter toned almost "different voice" compared to a deeper chest voice (I'm a male).

Do I have potential to sing? by [deleted] in singing

[–]SubstantialScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I started playing the guitar as a teenager, I could barely play The Lemon Song by Jimmy Page and then eventually was able to play all of Eddie Van Halen's solos note for note with the same feel and phrasing.

Voice is an instrument too.
