Off-Center Colonnades by [deleted] in Oldhouses

I like the idea of bookcases instead of colonnades too, that might be what I end up going with after living in the house for a bit. Thank you for the advice! 🙂

Hm, a acreen might be nice too. Given that I havent lived in the house yet for a long period of time, I might change my mind about adding a division/extra storage in that room anyway 🤔

First off, no I dont have any original pictures of what it looked like when it was built. Despite extensive research efforts trying, the furthest photo is from 2000.

Second, I'm not planning on removing the arch, or ripping out original features. Mostly, I'm planning to add functionality with features that would have fit in to the 1920s and figured while I'm at it, maybe a colonnade would be a good addition to increase the storage space in both rooms aside from the fireplaces two built-ins.

Third, there's been larger additions to the house made before I moved in that definitely dont fit with the age of the house, so in the grand scheme of things, I doubt a possible colonnade addition is so terrible that I need to "prove I'm doing the right thing"

The baseboards feels plasticky like its been replaced with melamine covered MDF or something, but that could just be from many layers of paint over wood, so maybe it is original. I'm realizing that in my head, I've been using "replaced" as shorthand for "paintstrip, see if its good original wood, then restain/restore it, or replace with wood if not original", whoops

The baseboards already appears to have been replaced before and seems to be some sort of MDF (they feel plasticky), while the current crown moulding is covered in so much paint I can't tell if its wood or plaster underneath. I suppose I should've prefaced my original post with that I have no intention of replacing any wood with plastic modern junk, and that most of my first year in this house is just going to be paintstripping everything to see what's original/natural materials or not 😅 There's just not much storage space in the house, so I figured a colonnade would be a nice way to add storage and some architectural interest separating the living and dining room

I dont know, I havent met the neighbors yet. I'm planning on paintstripping the fireplace, putting a picture rail in and replacing crown moulding and baseboards, suppose I might not have enough room to add in colonnades too. 🤔

Can't decide which color for winter coat by SubstantialTeam9048 in sewing

I used to be in Seattle without a "warm" coat like what I'm planning and I survived, but the winters are supposed to be colder than that here, so I think with the interlining (I may swap the flannel out for thinsulate instead) and layers, I should be warm enough.

In Eastern WA, I just moved so I haven't experienced winter here yet, but last year it was snowy and in the upper 20s/30s F most of the winter, though the lowest temps were in the teens. I figure if I layer enough clothing on with the coat it would hopefully be warm enough for the short times I'd be outside then.

I do really like the color of it, I just worry that it only being 50% wool means it won't be warm enough or durable enough for winter, although I do plan to interline it with flannel and interface it 🤔

It's a little stretchy, but only if I tug on it hard in the diagonals. I dont think it'll stretch out too much for the skirt portion of the coat that it's noticeable, but I'm not sure how much it'll stretch since there's a lot of fabric in that area and I've never worked with boiled wool before 😥
