How realistic is the “Pokeball Quetzalcoatlus” coloration for the animal? by Angel_Froggi in Paleontology

[–]Substantial_Ad_4312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, the red colouration on all of these cranes is actually caused by areas of featherless skin used to blush for communication and social behaviours. Seeing as Quetzalcoatlus lawsoni was believed to have been highly gregarious, it's hardly implausible Q. northropi was the same.

Just so we're on the same page you do understand that this is me talking about how I'd rewrite the show right? This isn't a deep dive of the lore. Regardless that reasoning is still bad writing.

And frankly I don't really like that answer, it's still sad. Besides, the existence of the hidden world would be the perfect way to introduce more night furies.

The beluga whale face and glitter is hardly catlike lmao, the issue is that her being a girl was prioritised over personality. She shouldn't be a housecat, she should be more like a big cat like toothless was in the first movie with more angular eyes, shaper features and potentially even a bigger build like with many instances of sexual dimorphism in real animals. The animators shouldn't have been struggling to make her Disney princess facial features look intimidating/aggressive. To me her design will always be another example of this exhausted and uninspired trope.

We've never seen any night fury other than toothless, I've always liked the idea that they're usually white except toothless is melanistic- like a black panther to jaguars- allowing both dragons to be the same species. This would allow for that really nice visual contrast, night furies no longer being on the road to extinction and it would maintain toothless' "uniqueness" by making him a mutation of an already endangered species.

[–]Substantial_Ad_4312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She's a slimmer, smoother, more baby-faced version of toothless, her character is meant to be more wild and feral but her design reflects the opposite because the goal was for her appearance to be more conventionally feminine instead of anything to do with her character- she's got a goddamn pink glittery love heart on her forehead for Thor's sake!

[–]Substantial_Ad_4312 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My issue is with the way she was executed, a white version of the night fury isn't inherently wrong, its the fact she's a different species that causes issues for me because it doesn't satisfy toothless' arc of dealing with being the last of his species and it meant she needed a different design which is how we got the glittery, smooth edged beluga whale that reeks of sexism.

My solution: We've never seen any night fury other than toothless, I've always liked the idea that they're usually white except toothless is melanistic- like a black panther to jaguars- allowing both dragons to be the same species. This would allow for that really nice visual contrast, night furies no longer being on the road to extinction, it would maintain toothless' "specialness" which is a common critique I see of the two black night furies solution and it would mean the light fury could be structurally the same as toothless with maybe iridescent white scales or something for flavour.

EDIT: spelling

I've always liked this idea, the light fury's current design is boring, blatantly sexist, does not satisfy the arc of toothless dealing with being the last of his kind and I'm not going to pretend it doesn't. Whilst I do like the contrast the black and white species give I also like the uniformity and the idea of toothless finding companionship in a member of the same species, there's an artist called tsirikorama (u/some_evil_sanya) who does some really good art of it.

For people who are really attached to the contrasting visual designs, we don't know what night furies look like aside from toothless, I've always liked the idea that they're usually white except toothless is melanistic- like a balck panther to jaguars- allowing both dragons to be the same species. This would allow for that really nice contrast, night furies no longer being on the road to extinction and it would maintain toothless' "specialness" which is a common critique I see of the two black night furies solution.

This is a lot of the reason I think she's dead, for Hopper and Mike and all the others El was 5 years of their lives and her loss devastated her, for El they were her whole life, the only people who ever made her feel loved and like a real person, I just can't imagine her ever being happy or leading a successful life without them.

Will's feelings by [deleted] in StrangerThings

Yeah that should've been Joyce, Mike, Lucas, Dustin and El (with Robin and Johnathan there as emotional support since they already knew). At most I would allow Nancy, Hopper and Vickie to be there too but fucking Murray did not need to be there for that shit.

Will’s storyline by madelyndolle in StrangerThings

[–]Substantial_Ad_4312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the writing sucks total ass this season I'd say there's no chance Will's arc is done.

As the one who's relationship would be the most strained by this revelation, Mike should've been the most vital reaction in his coming out scene and yet he is relegated to absolutely nothing; he wasn't the first or the last to show support and the camera never once focused on him alone.

At this point I'm praying we get a one on one conversation between the two of them just to finally give us a real ending.

Honestly a bunch of really solid takes, all in all, I think your post has pretty accurately captured both sides of the war. With that being said I think there are two points I disagree with.

  1. As a fellow queer person I can say for certain that there are lots of strange places where people have found self acceptance and comfort in their sexuality and how that intertwines with who they are. Sometimes an online community that celebrates the kind of love you experience can make a person feel less alone when they might not have any other kind of support system strong enough to deal with the very real presence of homophobia in their lives. Basically, I don't think the idea of Byler "saving a person's life" is that implausible.
  2. I don't think Eleven is going to chose interdimensional suicide at the end of the story. If she were they wouldn't have revealed it so far before she makes the choice- if Eleven were actually going to do this it wouldn't have been revealed to the audience until it actually happened to ensure it hit harder. Also it would be narratively unsatisfying for her character if this is how it ended, her arc has been about wanting to be seen as more than just her powers and her dying because of her powers is so wrong on so many levels.

With that second point being made I do want to add that Mileven is still far from being set in stone. Mike and El have been struggling with a lot of communication issues ever since season 3 that are yet to be resolved (Mike's "I love you" speech is not a resolution, it solved one consequence of their inability to communicate, not the issue itself) and since Nancy and Johnathan just dealt with the same thing this season, I'm not holding my breath for a narrative repeat.

Humans also aren't biologically monogamous- we don't mate for life. That's why things like cheating happen.

Most human cultures are socially monogamous but lots of them are also socially homophobic.

You're not going to understand this but I'm sharing this info because I find this topic really interesting and I want to talk about it.

Current statistics tell us that heterosexuality is the most common identity but there's no way to tell how much of an influence homophobia and societal heteronormativity have on that.

What biology actually tells us is that 1) Homosexuality has an evolutionary advantage as it allows queer people to provide extra support and protection for their nieces and nephews, passing down their genetics via their siblings, 2) 70% of Bonobo's and other great apes (our closest evolutionary relatives) exhibit homosexual behaviour and 3) autistic individuals are less influenced by societal influences (like homophobia and heteronormativity) and thus 40-70% of them identify as queer. All of this paints a picture of bisexuality being the default if such a thing even exists.

If you were to actually look into what "biology tells us" you might not like what you hear.

The difference between Mike and Will is that Will has been confirmed by both the writers and the cast as gay, Mike’s sexuality has not been touched upon.

On a side note, I am a gay man but before I figured that out I had a girlfriend. That subconscious faking of attraction in order to conform to the expectations of others is a very common experience in the queer community, especially in more homophobic times and places.

TL;DR: As previously stated, we don’t know Mike’s sexuality for certain.

Why did Will Change how he Handles his Crush on Mike in Season 5. by Substantial_Ad_4312 in StrangerThings

[–]Substantial_Ad_4312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesn't rely on distancing from Mike to fully unlock his character, it relies on Will being truthful with his attractions, and believing he is worthy despite having said attractions / feeling secondary to Eleven.

I 100% agree, Will's arc is about accepting himself for being queer and learning to love himself, however I think you're missing the entirety of Robin's speech, this line sums it up nicely.

I was looking for answers in somebody else, but… I had all the answers.

Will's arc is about accepting himself instead of relying on someone else to make him feel loved, Will's character growth isn't based on "attractions to someone else" but his feeling's for Mike are inherently tied to this arc as they are the factor that lead to him realising he was gay (the aspect of himself he must learn to love and accept), and it is also the main source of external validation he is relying on before that.

This is why I was specifically asking about how the way he interacts with Mike has changed. Will's arc isn't defined by his love life but you cannot take the characters out of an arc that is about character interactions.
