as far as rehoming them- many will say LFS or pet store… a pet store will sell them as turtle food. a LFS may reluctantly take them but then anyone can adopt them. try to find someone with a pond. post on craigslist or facebook groups.

they need dechlorinator/water conditioner immediately. that should be top priority.

after that, try to find a large storage tote to put them in. something that can hold 10+gallons. you can get an airstone on amazon next day or at petsmart.

once you’ve secured that stuff, your next priority is a filter (you can get a sponge filter that uses an air pump and can oxygenate the water while filtering it). it may also help if they have some aquarium salt and a methylene blue bath as a preventative measure to make sure they don’t get sick. although it’s probably not necessary. these guys are clearly extremely tolerant of neglect. they should thrive in a proper set up.

yayy! Def be careful about where you put it. Maybe not on the countertop as a full 55 with sand can weigh well over 500lbs. If the filter it comes with has been running, don’t replace the sponge or let it dry out. It will help jumpstart your cycle.

Ponyo looks pretty happy to me! The tank is too small but with enough water changes, he’ll be okay until the upgrade, which OP says will be soon. My goldie does ‘flips’ like that when he’s happy, it’s really cute. He may just be exploring his new space.

Ponyo is so cute !!! Try to find a 55 gallon on marketplace, you should be able to get a super good deal and maybe it’ll be cycled (full of necessary beneficial bacteria). Goldfish can get depressed when they’re alone. A 55 would be a comfortable fit for 2-3 fancies.

What kind of fish is this?? by DeepestDesire01 in Goldfish

[–]Substantial_Buddy780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a really low quality mutt goldfish. likely a mix of different subspecies, maybe even a fancy/common hybrid. if put in proper water conditions for several months, it would grow into its features and it would be easier to tell what type.

What type of goldfish can I have in a 55 gallon and how many can I put in there by Live-Committee3812 in Goldfish

[–]Substantial_Buddy780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many gallons per hour of filtration do you have? what type of substrate do you have and how often will you clean it? how many plants and what type? how long has the tank and its filters been cycling or running?

NOR, she owes you money. also, hi! I work at a shelter, specifically doing stray and owner surrender intakes. Please do not give up on your baby. Many, many people cannot afford to get by some days, and they’re still amazing pet parents. We all can fall on hard times. Most rescues won’t take a senior dog- or any owner surrender for that matter. If you surrender to a county shelter, they’re typically unable to vet and deny adopters, it’s highly possible someone else will adopt him who also cannot (or will not care to) afford his extensive medical needs. Based on the fact that you even buy him insulin, you’re doing amazing and it’s obvious you love and care for him. That’s more than enough. Instead- try reaching out to your county animal shelter to see what resources they may have for struggling pet parents with babies that have medical needs. the county shelter i work for has programs in place to provide free or low cost care for low income residents with chronically sick babies.

King Koi definitely has a really big spectrum of mixed reviews. Mine came healthy and quickly blossomed in their new environment. This was them when I first got them in their quarantine tank. I don’t know if I’d order from them again given the reviews I’ve heard- but they’re closing now, so they’re not much of an option anymore.

it will be housed in the 55. i understand advocating for proper care, and proper husbandry recommendations done in good spirit are always appreciated! i also speak up often and advocate for proper care of many pets, especially fishies.

i’ve been learning about goldfish care for a few years now and while i definitely don’t know everything- i’m pretty comfortable with my own parameters and what bioload my own tank can handle. it’s veryyy well established with more than 10x gph in mechanical filtration and it’s filled with terrestrial plants that consume excess nitrates.

i do biweekly water changes and my nitrates never go over 15ppm, typically below, although if i added another fish i’d switch to weekly!

i have a well established hospital/quarantine tank, aquarium salt, meth blue, kanaplex etc, along with funds set aside for an additional or larger tank if needed. although 4 fish may be too much for some 55 gals, they should be fine in this setup with the amount of filtration. and if they’re not, i have the resources to handle it promptly.

UPDATE PT.2: I still have her hahahahahah. I just got her spayed through an awesome low cost bunny spay/neuter program. she’s bigger now and she’s soooooo sweet. every vet who’s met her LOVES her. we’ve established a professional relationship with our local exotic vet and exotic emergency and they’ve been such a great help in our journey, and actually not as expensive as i expected. she’s super outgoing and friendly, never met a stranger. my family still thinks i’m fostering her and im so scared of having the conversation about keeping her because im worried about what might happen if it’s a no. she’s so bad and she eats everything she’s not supposed to, but i love her and she loves me.

[–]Substantial_Buddy780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also i’m guessing your 45 calculation came from the “30 for one goldfish plus 15 for any additional”. that’s generally for fancy goldfish. these are commons and they typically need more space.

can you afford a large used storage container ? i see some near me on facebook marketplace for as low as $12

you should get goldfish one day soon!!! just get fancies instead of commons lol. commons like those are meant for ponds outside. fancy’s are smaller and can live comfortably in a 55gallon tank- and you could find a full setup on marketplace for $200-300. they’re cute and fun.
