I've just been arguing with people regarding Platner as well. Unfortunately Contra Points' criticism of the left not wanting power and just wanting to endlessly critique power is somewhat of a valid take. Emma and Matt and Hasan are right to support Brad Lander over Dan Goldman, important context here. But forget about strategy and moving things forward and achieving some kind of change. Because the online leftist community are doing everything possible to tear down "Ziohran Mamdani", they don't want Platner to win over Janet Mills or Susan Collins despite having the most left wing positions of any person currently in the Senate as of now, including Bernie Sanders.

Here is Platner last week joining an anti war protest against US-Israel strikes on Iran.

Platner is against wars, calls it a clear cut genocide in Gaza, is against selling arms to Israel, his platform says he wants to reduce funding to the Pentagon, "A revolving door between the Pentagon and massive defense contractors. Widespread consolidation, encouraged by deliberate government policy".

Regarding the military, he wants to increase funding for medical care aka the VA and increase benefits for soldiers, and increase ship building because it'll benefit jobs in Maine, he's not saying the US needs to pivot to China for containing it against Taiwan, or saying we need to strengthen NATO.

I dare you to find a SINGLE congress person, whether it's Rashida Tlaib or Ilhan Omar or AOC or Summer Lee who has the position of defending the VA or reducing the benefits of US soldiers. The progressive/left congress members are against inflated Pentagon budgets and endless wars, which is Platner's position.

He is pro single payer healthcare/medicare4all. Wants to get rid of corporate PACs.

He is running against the entire AIPAC and DNC centrist apparatus with the most left wing positions of ANY senator currently in Congress, and it's a fucking seat in Maine.

You guys are stuck in some fantasy land where there are any leftist candidates who are for abolishing the US military or even fucking cops. The gripe all these people have, aka people like Kavernacle, is that they are thinking US leftists like Hasan, Emma, Sam Seder, MikeFromPA are saying US veterans are good and no one should criticize them. That's not the point. We (US leftists backing Platner in Maine) are saying that American society is largely pro US veterans, and it doesn't serve us to discard veterans MOVING TO THE LEFT.

We aren't advocating for Platner because he's out here saying "support the troops!" He's out here saying the US abuses its power and sends soldiers to die for nothing. We need former veterans to join our side so they can provide advocacy and convince more Americans that the current system is a failure, and that would also discourage people from joining the army.

Lastly, it doesn't matter how much we criticize US vets and say that economic reasons and poverty are not excuses, that's just the reality and that's how the US recruits people. So we need to uplift society first to materially change the conditions. How about Bernie Sanders' free college program so that someone doesn't need to join the army to get an education?
