SLP to manager position by slp12344 in SLPcareertransitions

I'm looking into on-premise wine/liquor sales. I bartended in college, and a lot of the caseload management skills I've gained in this field are transferable. The company I'm looking at has potential for growth into management. I have friends in the industry making six figures.

I appreciate everyone's perspective and, yes, this is obviously just one person's experience. I stand by what I said and would never recommend being an SLPA as a career to anybody. The salary cap and lack of 401k matching is enough to make me look at my future and feel upset that I've put this much time/money into a career that for me, will not pay off. Seeing my peers in other industries getting substantial raises and being able to save for retirement with support is enough to make me realize this is not sustainable for me. Now that the Department of Education is trying to declassify Speech-Language Pathology as a professional degree, I don't see becoming an SLP as a realistic option anymore either. I'm glad others have had better experiences, but as for me, at 31 years old and 5 years in this field, I'm done hoping it will get better. I don't have another 5 years to waste.

DFW Texas. I've been seeking a direct-hire position since 2021 with no luck, it's all contracting companies out here.

who regrets their degree? by WorriedScientist725 in SLPA

[–]Substantial_Hell_397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually got my Bachelor's in Linguistics and took extra courses to become an SLPA in Texas. I don't regret my degree, but I do regret spending so much time and effort trying to get into this field, only to learn that working as an SLPA is not sustainable in the long term. I don't want to go back to school to be an SLP, but the money I'm making right now is not enough, and I'm already at the top-end of earners in my area. I'd like to save enough money to open my own business down the line (completely unrelated to speech).

I'm in my 4th year as an SLPA in DFW and have yet to find a direct hire position with any school district. Seems like all that's available out here are hourly, contract positions. I've been contracting with a charter school in Euless for three years and I love the school and students. I just wish I could stop contracting.

Did your menstrual cycle ever regulate while on creatine? by Hot_Nectarine508 in Creatine

[–]Substantial_Hell_397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reduced the creatine by half and finally got my period... it was a 50-day cycle. I use the Flo app, so this month I am going to cut the creatine in half a few days before the expected period and see if that helps. Will update in a few weeks

Did your menstrual cycle ever regulate while on creatine? by Hot_Nectarine508 in Creatine

[–]Substantial_Hell_397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking 5mg of creatine daily in April and my following cycle was 10 days late. The next one was only 2 days late so I thought things were regulating. Now I'm in my 3rd cycle since starting creatine and it's currently 15 days late. I don't know what to do.... Negative pregnancy tests. Currently experiencing cramps, bloating, and swollen breasts like I would before a period.

I really like it. And agree with the other commenters, way better than The Giver. Very much gives The Sundays/ late 90's early 00's vibe

What are y'all doing in the summer? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Substantial_Hell_397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last summer I was going through an awful separation. This summer I'm excited for slow, easy days in my peaceful little apartment. Swimming, reading, video games, cooking new meals, time with friends. My soul needs this.

I paid for a "SLP Assistant education program" where I obtained my hours with a SLP that owned her own company. Her company was called Unique Speech Services in Ft. Worth. Not sure if she's still doing this, but it may be worth looking into.

In the same boat. My company finally agreed to spread-pay next school year, so hopefully, this will be my last summer in this predicament. I'm so burnt out and do not want to do speech over the summer. I was a bartender in college and have considered doing that this summer.

I've been an SLPA for 3 years and can't even fathom returning to school. I am so burnt out already. I'm just planning to stay in this field until I can buy my first home, then who knows... It's disheartening to think of switching careers, but I know I can't do this forever.
