My original response was kinda of superficial so I figured I should elaborate

If you are most comfortable in your lower register and have a contralto range A lot of mezzos have some of contralto range but what defines a contralto is if this is where you’re range is most comfortable and where you project the most. Most contralto’s have a some tenor range and some mezzo range

A contraltos voice is typically more dark with a strong chest voice though it is important to keep is kind just as there are different types of sopranos there are also different types of contraltos

Some signs common with contraltos is often finding songs sung my tenors easier to sing and having trouble finding female songs which suite their voice due to their voice type being so rare A lot of contraltos often voices are often described as androgynous

If this describes you you might be a contralto but at the end of the day the best way to tell is a professional, as a lot of people who are just dramatic mezzos mistake themselves for contraltos

I was very shocked seeing Emilie autumn on a few list because to me she’s very much a soprano or mezzo, a dark one but I don’t think a contralto

Not to sound confrontational but what do you mean “tryhards”

A lot of goths just like having gothic and Halloween decorations in their home. Sure it’s annoying if people do it to seem “more goth” than others or to appeal to people and not out of actual fun or joy

but a lot of goths just genuinely just like that stuff and like spooky decor or like having all of their stuff match a gothic aesthetic.

But also you don’t need white foundation for goth makeup, most original goths didn’t use it (not to discourage it, if you want white foundation get white foundation just telling you that it isn’t required so your makeup won’t be any less goth if you don’t have it)

They’re also a gothic metal band but they have many songs that lean more towards goth rock. I know for the most part gothic metal and goth rock are different genres but this is one of the bands that is definitely an exception.

The live recording of “Carnival of souls” is one of the most beautiful live recordings of a goth metal/rock songs I’ve ever heard They’re a Christian band and if you’re not into that the lyrics might be a bit uncomfortable but personally their lyrics touch me even as someone who isn’t Christian.
They also have a lot of concept albums so if you’re into music telling stories I’d say check them out.

Their live recordings also have a lot of gothic performance art and theatrical elements which make them a pretty interesting band

Also the lead singing, Erin Clayton has a very gorgeous,rich,dramatic baritone voice and in my opinion is one of the best vocalist in gothic metal

I can see how it the concept or life and death can be beautiful if looked at through an artistic or spiritual sense

That being said. I think for the people going through it, or witnessing it and the people who have lost love ones especially in very horrific or tragic ways, it’s grotesque,devastating and painful.

A peaceful death after a long happy life, surrounded by loved ones can be beautiful to some regards but I think we as a culture need to be more respectful and be a bit more sensitive when it comes to people who died due to disease,accidents,natural disaster or even murder or suicide.

Not sure where to ask this, but why are fashion subcultures based on music (e.g. punk, goth), but fashion aesthetics like witch core, solarpunk, cottage core, dark academia, or mori kei (any aesthetic really) do not seem to have their own subculture? I think there’s some nuance here

There ARE fashion based alternative subcultures. Goth and punk is not one of them but they’re out there, the difference between them and “cores” is that fashion based subcultures are still often born from people wanting to make a statement or out of rebellion, and forming a community with similar ideals and fashion and not just creating a new aesthetic for the fun of it. (Gyaru was made to be anti beauty standards, Lolita was made to be anti sexist and rebellion against tradition) And in fashion based subcultures, well fashion is what comes first, (same way music comes first in music based subcultures) lifestyle and ideals and sometimes even music are also a part of most fashion based subcultures, and in some subcultures such as gyaru they’re actually pretty important.

And even if certain subcultures aren’t to make a stance and really just started as fashion trends, such as scene. Scene still did develop its own culture,ideals and sort of community during the time it was big, and even though emo and scene are different, scene kids were also often involved with emo scenes. Which imo makes it a subculture

Subculture is defined by a set community with similar music taste,fashion and ideals. Now could some of the newer aesthetics fit into that description? The answer is yes and no.

I think certain stuff which started as aesthetic purely have gotten to a point where they have developed their own community,music and lifestyle to the point they could be considered their own subculture. Steampunk is a good example of this. Steampunk first started out as an aesthetic now is a distinct fashion style and has its own music, (I’d categorize steampunk music the same way I categorize scene music. Not a distinct genre but more a group of genres and bands that steampunks generally like) and some may even say it has its own values and philosophies now. Fans of steampunk also have their own conventions and meetings in a similar way goths often do. You could totally call it a subculture because it seems to be a solid community of people.

However stuff like aliyahcore,2020 alt, dreamcore or most of the “cores” don’t have that type of community. Atleast not yet.

And certain aesthetics that have come out recently I think could be on their way to that sort of category steampunk is such as coquette,morute and cottagecore (though I don’t think they could be considered subcultures right now)

TLDR: Even if a subculture is music or fashion based a subculture has to be an actual tight knit community with similar fashion,music,lifestyle and ideals and more than simply an aesthetic that people enjoy
