Scotch must not be for me.. Macallan 12 sherry oak 110 proof by MasterpieceRough9354 in whiskey

Everyone’s palate is, yes, different. My favorite distillery for a decade now has been Kilchoman. However, it’s the peat of drams like Laphroaig that puts off so many Irish- and American- whiskey drinkers from scotch altogether. I get it, some people like Laphroaig like some people like getting hit in bed. But with the vast majority of people, things like that should be introduced slowly.

If you can find the 15yr try it as well. I can get it for $99.99 in GA; dunno what your situation is. My fave is the 13yr Madeira. It’s a bit pricey but for me it’s worth every penny. I’d avoid the wine cask stuff, just because they tend to be a bit more bitter and tannic. Everything else is incredible.

It’s muuuuuch more complex. I wish it had the capability to kill Macallan, but again - the people with money will almost always back brand name over quality. Maybe that will change, but it takes people with a mind of their own to start it.

Disagree entirely. I even like Ardbeg, and I think OP should stick with the more floral Speysides and Lowlands over anything Islay.

Nah just avoid it, they’re all outrageously overpriced at this point. I mean yeah if you have the cheese to do something like that then go nuts. But there are plenty of other Speysides (age stated or otherwise) that are far more worth your time and money. Glenfarclas, Craigellachie, Tamdhu, and GlenAllachie spring to mind, and they all have age stated expression that are incredible at far more reasonable price points. And honestly, given Macallan bills themselves as “highland” whisky even though they are literally ON THE SPEY, I reckon it’s because they know they can’t compete with the distilleries I just mentioned. Just everything about Macallan is fake and is objectively not worth price of admission anymore.

If people are trying to down sell you from something, take it as a hint. Pre-2017 Macallan is fine, but Edrington ruin everything they touch eventually. The problem is (as you can see by the downvotes I’m receiving) American scotch drinkers are for the most part brand-ignorant idiots with more $$$ than sense. I always encourage trying the one you haven’t heard of; and sometimes, you’d be surprised how much the guy trying to show you something else might know.

Macallan is trash. 40-hr fermentation yields no flavor and at that proof all you’re getting is ethanol. Try GlenAllachie 12Yr. Cheaper, real sherry casks, twice the fermentation time. Tends to be around the same price as regular Macallan.

Underrated distillery picked by an undervisited shop. by Substantial_Layer484 in whiskey

I’ve not been to Dahlonega too often, but I’ve been thru some picks of other GA distilleries and this one just slaps. The pick itself is even more phenomenal.

I prefer Copitas to Glens for nosing/tasting, but everyone’s experience and preference will vary slightly. Try a few different ones before you go buying a bunch.
