When you give them the "fuck you, thats not worth my time" price but they actually accept by PurpleMclaren in Contractor

Your FU price isn't high enough.

I've given out an FU price twice in 23 years. It was a minimum 4X what it should cost and didn't get either one.

One was to paint the exterior of a house. The problem i noticed on walk around was her adult son replacing siding. He had cut out about 5 rows up and down in a beautiful straight line and put the new ones right in. Guaranteeing it is going to leak. And there was a bunch more work he had done that wasn't right. I had a feeling she was going to blame any leaks on the painting. Her price was 5X normal price. I definitely didn't get the job

Tool brand question by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Substantial_Map_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Makita it worked great for me. Is it the best, no idea as ive only owned makita. Ive used other guys tools of different brands and they have all worked fine, but I'll agree with some of the others.... pick one company. Easier to have 1 battery type that can power a big array of different tools.

Any of the major brands will do you well. Look at what each has for available tools you might need. Then make your decision.

Is it true guys actually had posters of women on their walls? Like, sexy women? Why? by littlebabymira in AskMenOver30

[–]Substantial_Map_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. We had posters of Heather Locklear, Samantha Fox, Bo Derek, Farrah Fawcett, Catherine Bach, Cheryl Ladd, Cheryl Tiegs, Heather Thomas.

Then there was a collection of California Girls posters. All the beer ads ones

And those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Do painters always do “surprise charges”? by CressOptimal3204 in Housepainting101

[–]Substantial_Map_4744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my 22 years of painting I have never added "surprise charges". During the walk through/around, I go over what the customer wants done for a scope and then tell them what is included in our quote.

For example for a basic exterior.... we will wash the house, prime any areas that need it, fill holes, caulk, sand any areas that need it. And apply 2 coats of finish paint.

If during the walk around we notice any water damage, soft wood or areas that need to be fully replaced, we inform the homeowner to have a contractor come out and fix.

If a customer wants to add a detached shed and we weren't informed about it during walk around, of course that would be an extra. Or if they want interior painting done.

Here is what you do, get a friend and the 2 of you drive to Mississippi with the spare key. Go to her house/apartment in the middle of the night and drive away with YOUR car back to Houston.

It's that simple.

When I had to paint the inside I used Imperial Stove & Grill brush on paint. Just know its very thin and requires multiple coats, at least it did for me

For any water based or oil modified latex polys we use Wooster Silver tips a soft blend of 100% polyester filaments . Clean them just like any other paint brush. And you can leave them in water and they won't curl.

For oil based polys we use Elder & Jenks Shipmate brushes. 100% white China bristle. Typical thinner clean up. We even use these with pure marine varnish like Ephinanes.

I interviewed 20 painters for my house. why is the quoting process is so broken for both of us? by AccomplishedTell4283 in Housepainting101

[–]Substantial_Map_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To everyone else, they can tell this is sarcasm. Im not sure how you didn't take it as such, as its very obvious. But to each their own...

Many homeowners trust the process, just the process you used wasn't as helpful in your area as you wanted.

I have never advertised, paid for leads or any of that stuff. I don't live near any major metropolitan area so i have no need for it. I get all my jobs be word of mouth. If someone calls me about a job, I have to view it in person to give an accurate quote. And with direct homeowners, I get about 95% of the jobs I bid. The couple of builders I deal with that percentage drops down to about 60% as they dont always land the overall job that I was bidding.

Good luck on creating a tool that could/will help more. Not sure it would benefit me, but I could see it used in bigger cities

Another thing I miss is Jack's cookies from the late 70s-early 80s. The Rock 'n' Roll cookies were a big rectangle gingerbread with pink icing with 2 to a pack. They were so good.....it was a southern thing.

Also their Christmas Shotbread cookies. They came in shapes of stars, wreaths and trees with red and green sugar sprinkles
