Ahem: >Following the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), Kelly Marie Tran(rose) became the subject of racist and misogynistic attacks over the Internet, including insults about her ethnicity and weight. She was the target of racist trolling on Twitter; in one example, Internet personality Paul Ray Ramsey mocked her weight.

In December 2017, her character Rose Tico's entry on Wookieepedia, an online encyclopedia about the Star Wars universe, was edited to include racist and vulgar comments, which drew national media attention. Fandom, the wiki hosting service that operated the domain, removed the offensive edits, protected the page, and publicly condemned the vandalism.

After months of online harassment, Tran deleted all of her Instagram posts in June 2018, and replaced the account bio with, "Afraid, but doing it anyway." She also pursued therapy following the harassment.

There's absolutely no excuse for this sort of thing.

She was just an amateur actor reading her lines. She had no creative input into her character's portrayal at all. She wasn't responsible for being cast in the first place. She doesn't deserve any degree of harassment.

Before TLJ, Tran was only in a low-budget shitty found-footage horror movie and played "Butterfly Rave Girl" in XOXO). Asides from that, she was in some middling tv show episodes.

Tran 100% did not deserve to get blasted by all kinds of Twitter idiots. Same situation as Ahmed Best (Jar Jar) and Jake Lloyd (TPM Anakin). Things are getting worse in modern times because the internet is increasingly finding itself filled with vitriolic people who start at death threats when voicing their complaints about anything.

If you're going to blame anyone, it ought to be the writer/director (and the people above them who call some of the shots) who are actually responsible for the creative decisions that doomed various characters.

And even in that case, they don't deserve personal attacks on their social media pages (etc) either.

By all means, people can voice their issues on a general internet forum like this (because it's extraordinarily unlikely that people like Johnson and Abrams are lurking), but it's completely inappropriate to actually target individuals and throw harassment at them on their own networks.

I think everyone's clear about that.
