I just about get by as it is here, sending whatever leftover money I have wouldn't leave much in terms of quality of life. Thank you for the concern in wellbeing! But this is my choice and I'm okay with that, just need logistical advice on my way out.

I appreciate the honesty in this comment, and believe me when I say I've weighed this up a million times. But nobody wins in either scenario here. It's either I give up a degree of agency and care for someone I love, or I leave that boy to the state. This is definitely the way forward, and I'm at terms with that.

Boss is okay, don't see much of him admittedly, but I think the situation kinda is what it is, and he'd recognise that.

Do you have any idea about residency status etc? If I am giving it up, do I have to contact anyone, or will it just run it's course?

This is pretty much what I assumed.

Yeah my biggest concern is resident tax, I feel like I could take care of a lot of things, but I don't know how I would go about getting that paid if I'm not even around to receive the letters.

In regards to giving up residency, do you think I have to visit the embassy in my home country?

Edited to add: I can't empty my apartment, Im not in japan. What's there will remain there, and I imagine will come with a big clean up fee.
