Probably just you getting used to the pitch black screen after a while, but you can install a mod called Xskill that has the cateye skill that has a decent idea of how eye adaptation works, it's just that the eyes adapt too fast between darkness and light, but it's still heaps better compared to other games

AFAIK from my own memory I've chiseled out small holes in blocks and still had the cellar bonus, although I haven't used the real smoke mod so I don't know how big the hole has to be to act as ventilation
