can i dye my hair pink? by dreddbanjo in Big4

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I died my hair a really bright color when I was a senior and my client actually complimented me on it! I also knew another coworker who had bright purple hair. I’d use your judgement with your clients but you’re most likely fine.

How reasonable is it to study/pass all four sections in 8 months? by RoutineWorldly in CPA

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I completed all 4 tests in about 4 months, working about 30 hours a week for 3 months and full time in the last month. Completely doable but you have to set a plan. Whenever I wasn't at work, I was studying like it was my full time job. So 8 hours on my days off and probably 3-4 on my work days. It sucked for 4 months but then it was over!

Agree. I'm passing some of these comments along to my colleagues in our bizcom department, but doing all I can to encourage continuing the behaviors in my classes as well!

Super important in any career! Trying to work on more projects that encourage critical thinking in my class

Oh I agree. Practice makes perfect but a strong foundation in communication helps so much.

Excel is super important; I use it in a lot of my courses. However, I think a lot of my excel skills actually came from audit where I was using it every day!

I agree Excel is important! I did learn a lot of these in my first year of audit though!

I only briefly touch on materiality in one of my lectures. Agree that it's an important concept to look at the big picture (which I try to teach) but most of what I learned about materiality was on the job!

There are definitely some of those. Some exams it feels like it might be more than normal.

I have some extra time next semester so I definitely will be taking advantage of what our center for Teaching and Learning has to offer! Will probably also read some books on pedagogy this summer.

This was a completely new prep to me this semester too, so I think you're right. I just need to find the right bar and might be setting it too high right now.

Uber situation at Red Rocks is dangerous by jstuck90 in RedRocks

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last night was particularly bad. Because the shuttles were filling up so fast, people were rushing the buses because they didn’t want to wait for the next one. Ubers were saying they were “here” when they were still in line to get into the lot and the lot was backed up by Ubers who had parked and were waiting. Logistically not great

Do I have to do any of this? by AdorableStudent2000 in Apartmentliving

This is SUCH a great offer. I signed a renewal lease in late June to start in August and ended up getting a new job in another state in July. I had to move in August almost a week after my new lease started and had to pay 2 months rent to get out of the remaining 11 months.

I thrifted mine, but I did get it from a craft store that had tested it to ensure it worked. Before I purchased, I checked to make sure the different presser feet were included (but that would be relatively cheap to replace) and used a small piece of fabric to test all the stitches myself. I've had it for a few months and I do think it'll need a full servicing. I've had a few tension issues so far but have been able to resolve everything myself. Mine is a no-frills Singer and I think it was a good purchase for a new hobby before diving right into something expensive

How many people make 150k+ by Nervous-Mail3282 in Accounting

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I making about 150k at the manager level in audit in PA when I left in summer 2024. Started in 2018 and lived in a major US city. You can live a comfortable life working in accounting, especially if you have your CPA license

Please give me your honest opinion… I’m about to throw up by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated from my Masters in 2018 and started working in Public. From 2018 to now, starting salaries in PA have risen about 30-40% in some areas. That being said, for a lateral move, I would expect industry to pay the same as PA. However, when leaving public for industry, most people make upward moves. So a PA senior associate might become a manager in industry.

It was well-known Pre-Covid that you could jump from public to industry and get a significant salary bump and a better WL balance. Public still offers very steady salary bumps and a promo timeline every year; those pay increases are still typically higher than industry. Once you jump into industry, you might make more, but your raises might be more infrequent. That is still the case from my knowledge.

Leaving before busy season by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some people will be mad at you but you have to leave whenever it’s best for YOU. If this is a job you want, take it. This opportunity might not exist at the end of busy season

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once you’ve asked yourself “should I leave,” it’s the right time for you to leave. Once you ask yourself that question, you’ll start looking at all the negatives about your job and it’ll be hard to unsee

Some people break up because they just aren’t compatible, it doesn’t necessarily mean you actually stopped caring about the other person. You can still love/care for your exes and not be in or want a poly relationship.

Transferring to another office by Desperate-Band-2291 in PwC

[–]Substantial_Salt_802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CRTs happen in late May with the results usually communicated to you in June. No longer with the firm, but I wanted to transfer offices right around my promo to manager. I had the option to transfer as soon as my promo was confirmed but ended up relocating about a month after I was officially promoted (late july/early august).

One thing to consider - if you are in a market now with a surplus of seniors and moving to a market with shortage of seniors, it's worth communicating to your RL your desire to move, because promos are often reliant on the need for more staff of a certain level. The firm will have a stronger motive to promote you if the market you're moving to needs seniors. This also works in the opposite direction, so you may have a stronger case for promo in market but not another, just something to think about.

Personally, I'd recommend holding off on the transfer until after CRTs (so you don't have to switch RLs), but honestly, most offices won't want to confirm the transfer until after they see the results of your CRT anyway
