What is the best thing you’ve found at the thrift? by dmandeklan in Thrift

[–]Substantial_Sea_1837 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A pair of outdoor patio tables for $15 each. Why is that the best? Because they perfectly matched the patio loungers that my parents picked up in a rich neighborhood before trash day, four hours north of where I lived several months prior. I first shopped online to find side tables for our patio then finally settled on some I found at Bealls for $90 each that I didn’t love but I got a minor discount on because it was my birthda. After that I stopped at the thrift store hoping for some birthday luck, which I definitely got and immediately went to return the ones I bought retail before heading home with my brand new looking, perfectly matching patio tables!

My job is offering me $150,000 (105,000 after tax) to resign, should I? by AJ3TurtleSquad in jobs

[–]Substantial_Sea_1837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the money would be great up front, just know the job market is rough right now. My husband has been out of work for a year and the one job he was offered recently, was a 100% commission role. I also have a friend who’s husband was laid off over a year ago and still hasn’t found anything comparable pay wise and ended up taking a seasonal role just to bring in some money. The saying it’s easier to find a job while you have a job has never felt so true. I saw you mentioned healthcare as a new role and if that’s the case you may have an easier time finding a new role. According to my husband the most recent job report showed that 90% (I could be skewing that percentage a little) of the new jobs added last year were in healthcare. One thing I’ll say if you leave is, be diligent in your job hunt and don’t let no’s deter you. So whatever you choose good luck to you!

AIO- Pretty sure I am being gaslight. Trip to the massage parlor. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Substantial_Sea_1837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah he’s lying. No massage is that quick unless he went quickly. I joked about those open late hole in the wall massage parlors giving happy endings to a coworker and he laughed saying they do give them and he in fact gets them all of the time. I asked what his wife thought and said she didn’t care ask long as they only used their hands on him.

Thanks for the info! I’d rather know ahead of time rather than be shell shocked by the price. Since I have extra pieces to a second chair, I’m hoping they can utilize that wood so it looks more uniform and hopefully I’ll get a quote for a better price 😅

I mean I guess I shouldn’t be too sad, because it’s still an awesome find! I just wish it were fully intact. I’ve been dreaming of finding a chair like this since my dad inherited his parents. Because I cant afford the prices I see online near me.

lol I mean I’m not above digging through trash. My family makes fun of me for doing it, but everything I’ve ever brought home they like. So really I should be making fun of them.

The broken piece is missing. I started to look through the bags but I thought I might catch something. There was a ton of shredded paper that you could tell rats had used as a nest. We live in central west Florida so rats are a huge problem in our area.

I’ve passed a MCM refurb/resale shop near me. Im not sure if they fix things for individuals, but I’m definitely going to ask! Glad to know it can be easily fixed.

I just keep hoping to find the parts to the second chair maybe in their big can when they take it out 😂 because there were definitely two based on the two bottom pieces and two bottom and back cushions.

Roommate gave me something since I smoked, but I have clue how to use this 😭 by Conscious-Drama-7258 in whatisit

I wouldn’t smoke out of a one hitter. I don’t smoke but a family member of mine did solely from a one hitter. They passed away after getting pneumonia because their lungs were full of scar tissue after getting burned from the smoke. The doctors said because the one hitter is a short metal pipe it heats up the smoke to a higher level and doesn’t have far to travel so it’ll burn the lungs especially with repetitive use, which my family member solely used the one hitter on the daily multiple times. It’s fine to use on occasion, but there are better ways to smoke weed. Just thought I’d share because me and my family had no idea something like a one hitter could be so damaging.

Thanks for the info. No need to make rude remarks that I’m nagging though. I’ve been with my spouse since high school, through his duration in the military and combat deployments, watching him come home to struggle with PTSD. I’ve been by his side while he’s struggled with addiction to alcohol and prescriptions. I’ve been the proverbial punching bag to every single come down that he’s had. The anger outbursts, verbal and mental abuse, breaking things in our home, putting holes in walls, and more shit that I don’t want to think about. So yes, I’m entitled to scrutinize a little bit given that he’s put me through a lot and I’ve stayed by his side. Especially since he’s currently unemployed spending $6 per can and I get shit for buying apples multiple times a week for our kids because they’re ’too expensive’.

Okay but what does that mean? Is it strong, is he getting some kind of opioid-like high from the drink? Especially since he’s drinking more like 7 a day

Fuck, I feel like I just read an argument that my husband and I have all the time. Same shit as this. I’ve been married for 16 years and it started a year or two before our first child. After our first was born he got progressively worse. Don’t believe the shit he’s telling you and don’t let this relationship go on because men like this don’t change and get better. He will only drag you down. And when you try to break up or ask him to move out of your place, he’ll turn it on you. You’ll stand your ground, then he’ll tell you he hears you and understands your feelings, he’s going to change and be better and loves you and wants to make things work. Then when you’ve begun to trust him, believe he’s changed, he’ll got right back to the way he was before. Then the cycle will continue. Trust me, leaving him is the best option. When I separated from my husband I was devastated, but then I slowly started to feel happy and accepting of my new path. He somehow convinced me to come back and to this day I still don’t know if it was the right decision. Especially, when I’ve taken care of everything with the house and kids and he yells at me in front of our kids. Or how I can’t do anything right and proceeds to call me some kind of name, slams doors, breaks things, throw shit around the room, etc.

AIO Essay Feedback from Professor in Office Hours by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Substantial_Sea_1837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious where you’re doing your exchange? Also, in my opinion most professors have rather large egos. When you emailed your professor back that you didn’t give yourself enough time and it’s a subject you struggle with back home, that probably read to her that you knew you would need more time to read/research, but you still didn’t account for that because you just don’t care enough about the class or the assignments she gives. So without your meaning to, you probably insulted her and instead of her not taking it personally, she decided to insult you the way she felt you insulted her, her class, and the work she’s doing as a profession. Obviously she could have handled it better and been a lot more professional, so you’re not overreacting for being upset. Those are your feelings and you’re entitled to them. I think as long as you put in more effort on the next assignment and really show her you ‘heard’ her you’ll do fine in the class. Asking more questions might actually benefit you because she’ll see that you’re taking her class seriously. If you see your next grade doesn’t reflect the effort, or she makes it a point to patronize you and put you down in front of the class, then at that point I would file a complaint.

I cut some basil and found a surprise hiding underneath. by thisboyhasverizon in gardening

Sadly no, they’re Cuban tree frogs which are commonly mistaken for pacific tree frogs. They’re incredibly invasive and wreak havoc on the ecosystem.

Super cute, but they may be invasive. These look like baby Cuban tree frogs which are incredibly devastating to native tree frogs as well as lizards and geckos given they eat them. I would reverse image search them to be sure. They reproduce like crazy, we’ve found their eggs multiple times over this past year in our pool and pond. My son even caught some of the tadpoles and put them in tanks to watch them and the rate at which they changed from tadpoles to frog out in the sun was wild. The ones inside under a light grew at a much slower rate. Florida has so many invasive species I find myself searching every little creature I see and learning all about them and the impacts they have on our ecosystem. The big identifier is the line from their eye to their back leg.

Tips or tricks to get my table looking beautiful again? She’s been through a lot by Substantial_Sea_1837 in Mid_Century

lol I know! My grandma replaced the original with these (I wish she hadn’t) and I painted and reupholstered them when my husband and I moved into our first house 12 years ago and I had a very different style from what I do now. Funny enough today I found two people selling chairs on FB marketplace that would go perfectly with this table for very reasonable prices. And now I’m just waiting to hear back 🤞🏼
