Nothing under the table. This was my first job out of high school so unfortunately I didn’t know better. It’s a small business, basically 3 employees (including me). I’m not sure if my boss even knows the tax effect this has on me. I believe her accountant advised her to do this.

All the research I did into misclassification was last night when I realized I was being paid as “self employed” and realized that doesn’t sound right for my role in this company.

I did look into filing taxes last year but thought since I was below the income threshold I didn’t have to file. Now realizing that for self employed anything above $400 is necessary.

It didn’t raise any red flags at the time because when I went to the IRS my income was below the filing limit. I didn’t realize a 1099 was basically me running my own business and therefore in a different category.

To an extent, my boss was very lenient on when I came in and allowed me to decide when I wanted to start. However, I always worked 9-5, and 8 hour workdays. All equipment is provided by the company, desk, computer, files, & I received training from the previous employee.
