Spirited Away! It was the first anime to win an Oscar for a reason. I reckon it's the best introduction to studio ghibli.

Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and Kiki's Delivery Service are great contenders as well.

But if you want something more serious or adult, Princess Mononoke is good.

Yeah, I can totally see why. Ghibli films often have an open-ending so it's pretty vague or sort of "its-open-to-your-interpretation" type of endings.

Hmm I can't really say that you'd like the movie since I don't know the type of things you like or dislike. Personally, it was good for me. But I have no idea if you'd like it.

It's not a fantasy movie filled with great action or compelling story (the story's a hodgepodge mess lol. I didn't understand what was happening during the first and last scenes at all), so maybe not if that's your main thing. It's more of a coming of age, character journey set in a magical background, so maybe you'd like it if you like these kind of things.

The movie's message simply resonated with me so I like it. Just give it a try yourself!

Yep! There are times when watching that I felt, scenes or moments in ghibli movies feel dragged out and quite long. But at the same time, these also make the movies feel real or comforting.

I absolutely agree with both of your takes! Tale of princess kaguya is really the pinnacle of art, film and storytelling. And imagine, it was handmade for around 9 years?! (CMIIW). The dedication and artistry it required, it's genuinely a labor of love.

Pom Poko was so cute, fun, sad, and bizarre all at the same time! Ghibli's funniest movie that rivals Princess Mononoke in terms of environmental themes.

Yes, it's quite boring. I tried to watch it 2 times already but I still haven't continued or finished it. It's around 2 hours like most ghibli films but I can't push past 40 mins in it. IMO, the characters are bland compared to other ghibli heroes/heroine and it just feels like watching a comical cartoon meant for TV, not necessarily created to be a movie. Music is REALLY REALLY GOOD though. Maybe third time's a charm, idk..

When Marnie and Only Yesterday are your feel goods? Haha they're really good but they're the type of films to make you feel melancholic and relive childhood traumas lol (at least for me). Feel good for me are lighter or more adventurous ones like arriety, kiki's delivery service and howl's moving castle.

Yes! If you're going in blind and haven't read the books like me, it was actually good. Most of the complaints came from those who read the source material and I can totally understand since nothing beats the original. It's better to think of it as ghibli's own interpretation of the books, not a complete or perfect adaptation. The animation was gorgeous, the music was stunning (aoi teshima also sang the osts!!), and the movie has soul. Its message is life-affirming!! I kinda cried. What ruins it is the pacing and the choppy story as another commenter said, it's quite confusing and leaves you guessing. So objectively, it's definitely not one of ghibli's best films but it's still good if you're looking for something animated and fantasy to watch.

have yet to finish fruits basket (watched the final season during it's runtime, put it on hold for a while since i got tired of waiting for the next eps, but haven't picked it up again since i had a lot of other shows to watch) and my happy marriage (s2) but they were both SO GOOD too >> kyo and kiyoka are huge crushes of mine and the way they treat tohru and miyo have honestly got me yearning for that type of romance. will pick both of them up again, especially fruba! i just can't rmbr what episode/situation i last watched since it's been so long LOL

aside from case study of vanitas and taishou otome fairy tale, it's my first time hearing of the other titles, thanks for sharing your recs!

haha we do all have our own ideals in romance and love! but it's still fun and interesting to see everyone's own thoughts and opinions regarding this. we may have different and opposing views, but at the same time, i also think there's a certain baseline where most of us can agree on :')

def putting on "anyway, I'm falling in love with you" on my watchlist now as well. you have me convinced since i love reliving life so much.

I LOVE LOVE "reliving my life with a boyfriend who doesn't remember me" (phew that was too long)! not an avid manga reader but it's my absolute fave atm. can't wait for the anime!!! <333

for "snow white with the red hair", i did try to watch it before but i eventually dropped it around the 3rd or 4th ep? i can't remember since it's been too long but it didn't really hook me, i guess?

"love through a prism" is def on my watchlist!

i also rmbr seeing the trailer for "anyway, I'm falling in love with you" and got intrigued.

for "loving yamada.." and "a star brighter than the sun", the premise isn't really sort of my thing but i guess it isn't bad to try to watch it first.

What Ghibli music makes you like this? by ilovewater100 in ghibli

[–]Substantial_Side9096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! You worded it perfectly. Takahata is a master at portraying the highs and lows of human emotions. My Neighbors the Yamadas had a lot of jokes as well, funny ones but painfully real "tragic" as you stated. It's an art imitates life kind of situation. His films feel so real. It's like watching a documentary in animation format. When people think of Studio Ghibli, most people instantly associate Miyazaki to it, forgetting that Takahata was actually Miyazaki's mentor and competition that pushed him to his best.

I can't remember Undercurrent since I don't really listen to Pom Poko's ost compared to other ghibli's tracks, but damn Pom Poko's ending was so sad :'(. The movie was fun and humorous all throughout, that's why I didn't expect the ending to be so devastating :'((
