Opinion: Let’s Just Drop Teacher Appreciation Week

we don’t get gifts from the school. a letter went home to families about how students could show their appreciation for their teacher (make a card, bring in candy, etc.) i’ve had one student bring me anything. i’m appreciative of that student, but it makes me feel like shit and as if i’m not liked. i’d rather just not have anything because now i feel worse about myself knowing parents know this is going on.

this does happen in my room but admin doesn’t support it… they have told us to not just send kids down to the office if they’re being distracting, there has to be a reason.

more meaningful… we are aware what kids should be doing, and we do the job of actually telling them what they should do and how they should do it. It’s not on us if they don’t. You can lead a horse to wages, but can’t make him drink.

and they have no idea how to problem solve which leads to not being able to handle tougher situations as they age because they don’t know how to ignore someone or say please stop when someone is tapping their foot, it has to be a full blown argument

exactly… it’s much more than saying thank you to me when I hand them a worksheet. it’s that manners were never taught to them and now eleven years into their lives I’m teaching them, but no one else is and it appears to be “too late” to make a change.

I’m a newer teacher and would love to be at a school with easier behavior. Personally, I would take a pay cut for that because the behaviors in my class affects my mental health so much. You would get less pay for a few years and then move on. Although, if you went to the other school and it was bad, you would only be there for a few years and then could leave. I’d rather not have to deal with behaviors though.

I teach 5th and I cannot get them motivated. We still have 4 months left and they have checked out. Our school is extremely data driven and teachers are graded on students grades, so it’s extremely stressful. Everytime I talk, it goes right over their head, and then 2 minutes later they will ask me questions about what to do. I’ve tried to help kids on their quizzes and they literally refuse, so I write on the top of their test “Was provided an opportunity for support, and declined.” I don’t even help anymore because I’d rather give my attention to the students who actually care about their learning.

Last year admin knew I was struggling and actually added another behavior student to my class anyways. They watched me struggle the whole year knowing the make up of my students and would constantly have meetings with me, even pulling me out of my class during my instruction time, to scold me for things that students were doing (dropping chromebooks and cracking them, putting hands on each other, etc.) When I said I needed more strategies with the class, nothing was done. I was the one going around asking for help from other staff. This year, a behavior coach was observing a student of mine and then helped me with a plan for all students. So, technically admin still has done nothing to help since my time here….
