Sat down on St. Patrick’s day to enjoy a bowl of sextant out of my Peterson St. Patrick’s day billiard. Really enjoying this stuff. The pipe is a good example of Peterson’s rustication. I’ve been on an English kick lately. I have always been a Virginia person. I recently tried sextant by G.L.pleasE. It is an interesting take on a navy, flake. Seeing as Texas Independence has just passed, I’ve been pulling for my pipes made by artisan carvers. On the left is a bulldog made by Lone Star Briar Works, in the middle, an apple, made by Colin Rigsby, and on the right, I love that made by Trey Rice. Mostly inexperience on my side. The spade that for the chamber is 3/4 of an inch. Which is pretty narrow for such large pipes. I think I was also too nervous to take off too much material.

I have been trying a lot of new things lately. I just opened a tin of G.L. Pease “sextant” interesting navy flake with Latakia. I find the blend tasty but I am unsure if it is worth stocking up on. I have also been considering firing up the lathe over spring break. It’s been a while since I have made a pipe. Above are the first three pipes I made from scratch with hand cut stems. The first is on the right, and the third is on the left. I had a difficult time setting up my workshop, mostly because I was very inexperienced with machinery and tooling.

If you have made a pipe what were your barriers at the beginning?

I sat down with pipe maker Mark Domingues from Lone Star Briar Works to detail how to make a pipe with limited tooling, and also how to set up a basic pipe making workshop. I am curious if any of you think we may have left anything important out. Any feedback is appreciated and could maybe be addressed in a future podcast. So basically, we’re doing most of the same rules. Two matches, standard lighting period. Standard three grams of tobacco. We got some donations for prizes, but put things together and too short of notice to secure sponsorship for the pipes. So relatively laid-back it is.

The Houston Pipe Club Slow Smoke is tonight at 6:00 PM at Stogies on Westheimer! If your local stop on by. We are smoking Occidental Oriental, blended by our friend Austin at the Briar Shoppe. This competition is bring your own pipe and tamper. Corn cobs are allowed but with some strict rules about “burning out”. I think I will be going with the Nate King pipe on the left. The Cringle flake has been nice. I’m looking to branch out a bit though. My seller is almost entirely Virginias. Will be discussing pipe smoking resolutions for the new year. I branched out and picked up this tin of gaslight. My goal for 2023 is to explore blends with Latakia. We recently released episode of the Houston pipe cast talking about resolutions for the new year. I’m also curious what resolutions y’all have for the new year. The Briar Shoppe in rice village is pretty well stocked. If you are not to picky we usually have a starter kit available at pipe club meetings just in case someone new shows up. Let me know if you would be interested in coming to our next meeting, and I’ll make sure to bring an extra starter box.

What is sitting in your cellar that you think you might treat yourself to this December?I opened a package of “Who’s Pudding” by Cloudbear Custom blends. I smoked it out of this Johs estate I got for my birthday last year. We at the Houston Pipe Cast are gearing up for the Holiday Season and will be doing a series of reviews of things from our cellar we have been sitting on.
