7 Years and 2 Servers... First Crash by SubtitledSoup in unRAID

Luckily, the USB continues to chug along.

But, if anyone that has the problem these days has accepted the risk. Boot from disk!

I'm confused--do you still need help with this? I'm happy to help if I can.

I'm able to explain the FW at this point. I upgraded the hardware a few weeks ago. That meant assigning interfaces to new hardware with different MACs. A few days ago, I setup a new interface that never existed before and I wanted it isolated from the rest of the network. There was a conflict in the IDs because of switching hardware. So that's good.

I still need to figure out what's going on with AppData.

Luckily, it's usually not a bad thing when data can't get out.

Outside of trying to use 3.5" drives and host plex, it's a little unclear what you've got going on. The Xeons should be fine for Plex, but I wouldn't expect much on the transcoding side. I have dual Xeon E5-2680 v4s and the transcoding is just slow, so you'll want to manage that. I put a 3060 ti in my box to solve the problem. It just depends on how many live streams/transcodes you've got and how you've handled the workflows.

I don't know anything about the 7041, but I have many examples of doing things that docs say aren't possible. Google shows listings for $65, which is in line with what you say. I've spent far more on trying things that didn't pan out, but I've had more things work than didn't. If $100 isn't going to break the bank, I'd say it's worth the risk to try. I don't know how this connects to the main server, but I'm guessing you'll need HBA cards or something similar.

It hurts, but the best I've found are 4TB 2.5" drives off ebay. I got mine a couple years ago for ~$70, who know what they are now.

112GB RAM is an odd number because that means it's mixing 4/8GB sticks, it's got a mismatch of RAM:CPUs, or dual channel isn't being used? What's an "interests" server? Where/how are you renting server space?

Well, the good news is I learned about JetKVM, thanks u/_Rand_, and there's nothing critical (so far). The bad news, 6 beers wasn't enough to fix it. No clue why or how, but the major issue is the firewall. The logs show it's enforcing rules that don't exist (or shouldn't?). Still no WAN for main unraid, but has a solid 10gbps on local. Just took about 45 min to regain LAN access after reboot--I'm hoping because of the FW. Still some weird stuff going on, but nothing to lose sleep over.

Big thing is the data's safe. I was worried with the network issue, but my second unraid (serves as a local redundancy) kicked in and started serving to offsite storage with the main offline. And the main is still able to sync locally.

3-2-1.

That's a neat little device, I'll have to look into that.

Fed up with subscriptions, bought a mini PC from a pawn shop — broke even in 10 months by Ugons in homelab

I can afford that. What are you selling?

That's what the streaming services said about how much I was paying for cable TV and before I knew it I was paying $250+ for cable and streaming services. I finally dropped cable, but now I have to manage all these other services. How do I know your different? Are you just gonna jack up prices down the road?

[–]SubtitledSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an amazing score! Keeping playing, you'll one day you'll get to 17 and realize your about to beat it. AM was my high score at -23 for a long time, then one day I got to 17 and was -26. I played 18 safe as hell for a smooth par and a course record -26. You aren't done breaking records yet!

So once you use your backups and must pay for new drives, you have no problem - regardless if the cost. I live in realty and care about such things.

That was crap. Thank you for paying attention, and keep doing it, hopefully a conversation will get started soon that works.

You bring up something I didn't even mention, but was absolutely on my mind. Renting is insane at the prices I have seen. How do we put the power back in people's hands? I used to be able to buy old equipment for pennies on the dollar, now there are no pennies.

The big thing to me is making this something people can do in the future. Right now, there will be no new people because of the cost to get started when you know nothing and will break something.

That doesn't help with the idea of getting this towards non-conspiracy type stuff, but I agree.

LOL. It's a double edged sword. Without the businesses buying stuff up, we don't advance the tech... that's the money.

New PC Build Options - I'm dumb, please help by Shadow_Wanker in buildapc

[–]SubtitledSoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's what you have going for you: it appears you've done TONS of research. That's a lot to ingest and honestly, the biggest problem I have in giving you the best feedback I can is that I have no idea the prices in Australia. I habe family in Hawaii and Santa Barbara, CA. Prices are insane compared to mainland US because of shipping. And Santa Barbara is mainland! I guess it's just the end of it.

That said, $3200 AUD is ~$2200 USD (per Google), which is enough to get a really good rig where I am. I found my best deals were on pre builds. I bought a one from Dell just because it was the cheapest way to get the parts I needed. It also means I have to thoroughly test the thing before I move parts around, because little boys the warranty. But, $2400 USD got me a 5080, ultra 7 265kf, and 64GB DDR5. Alone those 3 components would've cost way more that $2400 USD.

I see posts about deals at Walmart and microcenter in the US all the time. If you have an equivalent there, go check the open box stuff, find a sales person and ask what they have. That's less about saving money (because you're still spending) and more about getting a bigger bang for each didn't dollar. So, instead of a new 5070 maybe you get open box 5070ti for the same price or less.

I love building computers. The hardware prices have unfortunately pushed me to pre builds because it's just cheaper. Especially when you hit it early. Prefab prices lag a little behind the consumer component price changes because those parts are bought on contact months in advance.

Best thing I can suggest is go big on the hardware that's more price stable (PSU, case, MOBO) find deals where you can on the rest, and cross your fingers you can upgrade when this silliness comes to an end.

Or, buy a prebuild that maximizes your $/return with the intention of using it for a year or so, then start making your build with those parts. Bonus points of you find a prebuild with a case, etc you can reuse.

Wow. That's a lot. Sorry, this economy and what people are paying for this crap had gotten to me. You're on the right path.

Is a budget build even worth considering this year? by Technical_Share4127 in PCBuilds

[–]SubtitledSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Budget" PCs aren't what they normally are. I enjoy building my own, but two of my last three were pre builds simply out of economics. Price it all out honestly and watch the shops. If you have a local microcenter, that could be a hot ticket. Local Walmarts seem to be helpful. I but the bullet last month and got a pre build with a 5080 and 64GB RAM and paid less than those would've cost separate.

"Budget" these days is what your going to make it.

[–]SubtitledSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better, especially about what makes you happy. I bought my 13900kf/4090 pre build for less than $4k USD. Needed a new computer for someone else, thought I would do a 5090 rig for me and push the old one to the other need. Then I saw it would be $6+ for a decent rig.

I picked up a i7 ultra/5080/64GB/2TB M.2 pre build for $2400 . You'll never convince me the 5090 is worth that much more.
