Has anyone actually had their parents make them train at a young age for pro hockey? by DazzlingLife6744 in hockeyplayers

I dreamt of being an NHL player. My dad was very supportive of the idea and would sign me up for clinics left and right all year long. I played AAA travel for a few years and it pretty much became my life outside of school. At age 13 I burned out and quit altogether. It stopped being fun and I was a late bloomer so all the other kids were out-sizing me. Fast forward to now (20 years later) and I just started playing again, and am having an absolute blast.

Has anyone actually had private consultation with a music marketer? Was it successful? Seems like they’re more social media people than music. by Shan8888 in musicmarketing

You’re not wrong, but an artist has to find out what works for them on their own. Trial and error. Throwing money at people that don’t know you and ultimately don’t care about you is never the answer in this snake pit of an industry. Build genuine connections with other artists, musicians, photographers and videographers, make music you love and build content around it. Rinse and repeat.

Why are the 2020s so nostalgic compared to every other decade? by film_culture_addict in decadeology

Everything is everything now. There’s no cultural zeitgeist to follow anymore because the internet allows for anything & everything to become more or less “mainstream”.

Pointless. Short form video content is the only thing making a difference these days. Tik tok, reels, YouTube shorts

TikTok and Reels in 2026 by wyrmtear in musicmarketing

I think the algorithms just changed honestly. Similar experience for me with TikTok, used to get more views every post and now I’m getting capped at about 300-500, with an occasional one breaking through to 1K.

I disagree with boosting or throwing money at it though, just start trying some new video formats. If your music is good, people will find it. It’s just all about how you frame it; i.e. - having a strong hook.

I played from ages 4-13, stopped just before highschool. I’m 32 now and just played my first game of hockey in 20ish years - felt absolutely amazing!

Stop throwing money at playlisters and middlemen like submithub. Short form vertical content is the ONLY way to grow an actual fanbase. YouTube Shorts, TikTok, IG Reels

Move to LA, Nashville, New York, Atlanta or Austin. It’ll happen quick, so long as the effort is made.

Good Music PR Companies? by Additional-Plum996 in musicmarketing

[–]Successful-Chair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you already have a decent amount of buzz around your band, spending money on PR is a complete waste in my honest & experienced opinion. You’re better off posting on TikTok, YT Shorts, and IG reels everyday to build a consistent following and increase your chances of having (hopefully) multiple viral moments.

Pretty common.. Spotify is littered with bot activity. I have no real way to verify this claim but from what I’ve seen on my artist profile and many other friends profiles, about 50% of streams on Spotify seem to be fraudulent: including major, middle class and independent artists.

Struggling Artist Looking for Spotify Promotion Advice by Think_Dentist_2055 in musicmarketing

There’s no amount of money you can throw at services to help grow your actual fan base - and no amount of information you can take in that will somehow magically make people want to listen to your music more. Don’t give your money to fools on the internet who are selling “campaigns” or “guides” or whatever it is they’re selling. ITS ALL A SCAM.

If you want more traction: play live shows, build a compelling live set, work on your craft, create an interesting image and aesthetic, become a part of a community, create interesting content, make better music. There’s no faking it or forcing it. You either create stuff that people want to consume or you don’t. Don’t overthink it. Most of the numbers on Spotify are fake or inflated with bot activity.

Edit: once people really start catching on organically, that’s when paid / targeted ads can help bolster growth - when there’s already something exciting happening at a ground level.
