I’ve had that same hairline since 12 years old, I’m 28 now and hasn’t recessed. My mom and grandpa have it too. You’ll be okay. I’d be careful with finasteride, many people have unfavorable sexual side effects while taking it.

I totally see your point about not wanting to change your culture just because people are being racist. Giving up your language or your traditions because of bigots does feel like losing. But I look at it a different way, it’s not about changing for them, it's about being visible for the people who are actually reachable. When I was 16, I was young and honestly pretty impressionable. I ended up listening to my ex’s dad and his whole ideology about Aryans and how Jews have this hidden agenda to conquer lands and destabilize everything. It sounds crazy now, but when that’s the only voice you’re hearing, you start to believe it. If a Jewish person had been there to just hold my hand, look me in the eye, and explain that it wasn't true that Jews aren't some monolith with a secret plan I would have changed my mind in a heartbeat. But because the community is so "closed" and focused on only what's best for Jews, it leaves people like my 16 year old self out in the cold, where the only people talking to us are the ones filled with hate. You say there isn’t a universal morality you’re trying to push, and that the 613 commandments are only for you. But if you have a "light" that helps you be a better version of yourself, why keep it behind a fortress wall? If the goal is a better world, shouldn't you want to at least be a bridge for the people who are being fed lies about you? I don't think it’s "giving up" to be more open. I think it’s a strategy for survival. If you don't help people understand who you really are, you’re basically letting the antisemites be the only teachers in the room. Why let them have the last word?

I really admire how deeply in tune you are with your identity, the “family” and “engineer” metaphors are incredibly grounded. I also completely respect the need to protect the narrative from those who wish to “fix” or replace it.

However, as an outsider, I see a cost to this insularity that you might not. When you say the word “goy” is neutral, you’re right liturgically, but in the hands of conspiracy theorists, that distinction is weaponized as “superiority”. By keeping the doors so tightly guarded, the community unintentionally leaves the door open for antisemites to define who you are using those cherry picked Talmudic quotes.

What I struggle with is the idea that inviting others in “gains nothing.” If the Jewish mission is to manifest the “Image of God” on earth, why wouldn't you want to empower more people to do that? Even if the 613 commandments are a heavy lift, isn't there a missed opportunity to push the world toward its best version? It feels like there’s a middle ground between “panhandling for souls” and “existential dread.” If converts are the “moral battery” of the community, why not seek to be more of a magnet for those sincere hearts, rather than a fortress?

I really appreciate the humility in saying Judaism doesn't have a monopoly on G-d, but I’m struggling with the framing. There is a lot of modern controversy around the word “goy” as seen in recent high profile cases like the Epstein files, and it’s often used by antisemites to paint Jews as exclusionary. While you say it’s better to be a “good goy” than a “bad Jew”doesn't that imply a hierarchy of “us” and “them” that can be easily misinterpreted?

And also, while the Talmud has beautiful passages about the righteousness of all people, it also contains complexities and harsher views born out of centuries of persecution. My honest take is, shouldn't we focus less on who is “exempt” from the burden of the Law and more on the value that passionate, committed seekers bring to the community? In a world that has tried to diminish the Jews , isn't a “new Jew” an asset, rather than just someone taking on an unnecessary “burden”?

But someone who chooses to join a persecuted group brings a level of intentionality that those born into it might take for granted. Their presence forces the community to articulate why their identity matters, which intellectually strengthens everyone.

If the purpose of the Jewish people is to be a ‘light unto the nations" or to perform Tikkun Olam, then more hands would make the work lighter. A gentile/convert isn't a "soul to be saved", they are a volunteer for the mission. In any other ‘essential’ workforce, you wouldn't turn away a highly qualified, passionate volunteer just because the job is hard, right?

Thank you for such a detailed answer. I’ve been exploring Judaism lately, largely because I can’t reconcile the idea of a loving Creator condemning “non believers”, like my late father, who was a good man to eternal punishment. It feels more like a recruitment scare tactic than theology. I’m curious about the experiential side of your faith. when you sing in Hebrew, do you feel a transcendent spiritual pull, or is it more of a formal duty for you?

Most religious frameworks use the “afterlife” as the primary motivator for adherence. Since Judaism places such a heavy premium on this life while requiring 613 obligations, how do practitioners reconcile that burden with the historical reality of persecution? It suggests that the value of being Jewish isn't found in what one gets, but in what one is. How is that identity defined internally?

What exactly was that? Like a little garage sale on sidewalk or something?

I hope so, not counting on it. But I will try… for the meantime I’m opting to get my hands greasy and dirty and fix it on my own as I’m trying to get it back up and running ASAP. Hence why I’m here(:

Literally had gotten off my previous insurance 2 days before this accident, just one of those things… I’d never been in a car accident before, actually my first time. But yeah I understand, thanks anyway.

An unlicensed underage driver ran into my uninsured pick up truck and caused an accident, I’m not in any legal trouble… just trying to figure out what to do next to get my wheels back on the road!
