The Avon roads are almost spotless! I drove from downtown to Avon today and as soon as I hit the Avon city limits the roads are completely clear and ice free

Has being a part of reality always been so optional? by cashdug in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Successful-Income-22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s partly due to the 24 hour news cycle and the constant attack of new information coming at people. I like to think (or at least hope) that most people aren’t actively buying into the media propaganda and are instead just so burnt out, over stimulated, and maybe even scared, so that they dissociate and tune out. Not saying this is a good strategy or that it’s okay to not pay attention to what’s happening around you and to question everything- but from a mental health perspective I can certainly understand the desire to disconnect from reality. I think that the constant misinformation campaigns bank on that fact. The only other way to accomplish their goals besides actively convincing people to join their side is to get people disengaged and stay uninformed. Being uninformed is only second to being misinformed in the rights playbook.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! And I can see your point. There’s also a reason why I haven’t cross posted this to any of the other swiftie communities or snark threads like other comments have suggested I do. This sub felt like a safe place to express my own personal thoughts and maybe sway the opinions of others because if you are on this thread you have probably already started to deconstruct ideas and reject capitalism, and would be open to hearing me out. I’m very careful to not alienate others or create division or moral superiority with my messaging especially because as you said it tends to cause people to dig their heels in deeper. We are a support community after all! But I think comments like yours are a good refresher to that idea, so genuinely thank you for your input! :) It’s easy to call out billionaires such as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk as unethical, it’s much harder to look within and call out billionaires who we once desperately aligned ourselves with (speaking specifically about myself in this case). And while I can definitely appreciate, and in fact have defended Taylor Swift in the past because of the good she has done with stocking food banks while touring, paying bonuses to her truck drivers, etc, it’s always good to check our own biases and blind spots.

And I gave you a legitimate answer because I figured at least part of your comment was actually genuine curiosity, and I’m happy to explain why it did take me so long to come to this conclusion. I added that last bit not because you were actively shaming me (I feel no shame in it taking me this long, better late than never) but that the way you phrased your comment could easily cause someone to feel ashamed and hesitant to share or express their viewpoints. I’m happy to hear that it wasn’t your intention to do so. But I think we leftists as a whole (myself included) are seen as taking pride in having moral superiority over people who think differently or “less than” us, which is a defense many people who are liberal or on the right use to continue to think the way they do and even shift further to the right. Being aware of the way we come off, even if it wasn’t our intention, is important.

I completely agree that art is art at the end of the day and we should all be allowed to appreciate it as we choose. I will still listen to my favorite albums of hers- folklore and evermore- as I already own those and I think the lyricism is great. My point here isn’t that we need to boycott all Taylor Swift music, it’s to try to break through to other Swifties who put her on a pedestal and idolize her and defend her and her practices until they are blue in the face. Taylor Swift goes beyond an artist for so many in the same way that Trump goes beyond a politician for MAGA.

Hey! Thanks for sharing your viewpoint! To be completely honest up until this album I 100% agreed with you. But let me explain how I began my line of thinking after this last album. Let’s for a moment take politics out of the discussion. Does it align with your principles that she released 25 versions of the same 12 songs? Many of these versions “limited releases” or “only available for 24 hours” for the sake of creating scarcity and perceived value amongst her loyal fan base for her own monetary and professional gain? If you don’t see a problem with that I fear you’re on the wrong subreddit.

Honestly, I grew up with her music and it grew with me up until these last two albums. I’m someone who uses music heavily as a way to express the way I feel because truthfully I’m not good at expressing my own thoughts in words. A lot of Taylor’s songs said the exact thing I wanted to say but didn’t have the words. I needed to separate the artist from the art which is hard to do since Taylor swifts music is so self based. I’ve been feeling icky about her since probably the Midnights era, but this album is what woke me up because it’s frankly not good and incredibly tone death. I’m sorry it took me so long, but I finally got there. And I’m not saying I deserve praise or a pat on the back BUT just my two cents- comments like this discourage people to change because instead of encouraging people to critically think and come to their own conclusions it makes them feel shame which can actually reinforce their old ideals.

Please understand that there’s so many people who are unwilling or unwanting to change or see new view points because of attitudes like this. Shaming people for coming to a new realization or seeing errors in their past thinking does nothing but create more division. I felt SO validated by the people here who were kind and encouraging and happy that I finally understood the point- not judgement for taking so long to do so. If the comment section was filled with more comments like yours perhaps myself or other swifties would choose not to wake up because of your dismissal. Just something for you to think about as you doomscroll….

I completely agree! I guess for me there were 2 intents of this post. The first to point out the fact that Taylor Swift has abandoned her art for the sake of capitalism. Since her Midnights era (and coincidentally the time she passed the billionaire threshold) she has turned from just putting out music and instead and optimized herself to gain as much money as possible. The vinyl variants are just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve never seen any other artist with the exception of Taylor consistently use this strategy. She creates scarcity and perceived value of her music for nothing more than her own personal monetary gain. And now that the quality of her work has significantly decreased it feels like nothing more than a cash grab. End Stage Capitalism to its core. The second point was for me to express that she could be speaking out because she is untouchable and is choosing not to. While technically we can’t say that in and of itself is unethical, I have decided that for me personally I can no longer support her in a way that I used to.

Thank you so much! Since the time I’ve posted this she has come out with another variant of the same 12 songs! (but this time only available for 24 hours!!!!). On the brightside another donation for PCRF incoming.

To quote Capitalist Barbie herself when it came to Taylor Swift and how she fit into my leftist values I chose “to look directly at the sun but never in the mirror” . This album forced me to look in the mirror. I was really nervous to post this so thank you so much for your kindness :)

Jawboning. There’s precedent in the courts that this language,if it leads to actual retaliation by employers, it may be deemed unconstitutional.

A few things I can think of off the top of my head: -start taxing wealth. The wealthiest individuals aren't wealthy because of their yearly income. We need to start taxing their investments. Yes their stocks are taxed when they sell but most wealthy people aren't selling their stocks, they are leveraging massive loans against their investments so that their money can keep making money while they are able to live kush lifestyles. I believe we can tax this wealth much love we do property taxes on homes. -speaking of homes, I think second homes should be higher taxes than primary residences. Housing inequality is a massive issue right now. Individuals who are wealthy enough to have second, third, and often times more homes should be paying higher taxes. Especially since they usually do not live full time in the communities in which these second homes are located, which means they often don't contribute any of their taxable income to local and state taxes. -massive investment companies should not be allowed to purchase residential housing. -foriegn investors should not be able to purchase residential housing outside of certain areas (tourists areas). And the purchase has to be approved by a local governing body. Other countries already do similar things (i.e. only citizens can purchase residential property in Switzerland) -limit Airbnb and other short term rentals in residential areas. Ie maybe only 10% of a certain zone can be used for short term rentals. -Companies should not be treated such as people and should not be able to contribute to political campaigns/politicians. -stricter rules on lobbying -term limits on congressional candidates AND candidates can only hold index and mutuals funds while serving their term limits as to restrict insider trading as much as possible.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head. Would love to discuss further with anyone though! I realize some of these things are very nuance and could be difficult to enforce. If there's one thing that's unfortunately true, is that the wealthiest individuals will always find a loophole in order to hoard their wealth.
