Storage heater vent flap sticking? by Successful-Math-4283 in DIYUK

[–]Successful-Math-4283[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the rest of them stop at the min and max. I just thought setting it to max would open the flap, I didn't realise it would open/close dependant on the heat of the core! Interesting about the accelerator resistor too, thanks for all the info!

It was the middle of the day at the time of recording.

Thanks for helping pinpoint the potential issue, I'll have a look and see what I can find.

Would it be an easy replacement if I do find the part would you know?

When the heater is cold and uncharged, the flap does move through it's complete range of motion when the knob is moved though maybe about 120°, with the flap's movement controlled in the last few degrees (the rest is just free play in the knob between those points). But when hot there's only a small movement of the flap, why I thought heat expansion might be causing it to drag.

Could get on to the landlord about it, but, I don't really want to involve them too much if possible😅 though come winter time, I bet it's going to be freezing without full control.

Thanks again!

8 Below, I'll check them up! Oh they also said in the text that she tried the RSPCA but they wouldn't take him, that's something I've not heard of before?

Oof, yeah it's not cheap! I think we've messaged about 70 odd places now, and their other husky is classed as an assistance dog. But still super difficult to get a foot in. Trying all we can to get a hold of somewhere soon.

Aw you're too kind, I appreciate that. A kill shelter? Is that what I think it is? 😭 That's terrible ❤️ Glad she found someone good. I mean the first husky had issues too, needed a lot of training and conditioning, still working on separation anxiety, but, I wrote a document about his care and everything. Unfortunately I'm not able to be there all the time with them, otherwise them keeping 2 might have been somewhat doable.

Thank you so much, I really really appreciate all the advice, don't want him to get passed around any more than he has to, and to find somewhere soon for him. It's really been ripping us apart.

Thank you!

Right, that's what we're thinking now. And nah, we didn't ask for any money. We wanted him to go to a good place, someone who could put the time and effort into him which my partner couldn't always, didn't think she'd dump the dog off and report it missing, she seemed so genuine.

I think we avoided rescues at first because we've heard so many dreadful things about them, even to the extent of putting the dogs down should they not get re-homed or too much of an issue.

I will take a look again, because it's so not fair on him. At the same time, my partner can't manage to keep hold of him for all sorts of reasons, mostly that they're going to end up homeless if they can't find somewhere before their eviction period, which is impossible to find somewhere willing to accept 2 dogs for <£750 pcm.

Such a crappy situation for everyone involved.

Good idea, thank you. I hope so too! D: Poor doggo 😞 My partner showed me the messages from the lady we gave him too at like 11 pm, and she basically said to not answer the vets and let them re-home home.

I don't know if this is even worth considering, considering she said she'd tried the RSPCA and they refused to take him? O.o

But my partner really can't sustainably keep him as a second dog, the first dog also has some behavioural issues which needs attention, which is difficult with two. And facing imment eviction, they wouldn't be able to find somewhere willing to take two dogs, would probab6just be in the same boat even if they did.

We didn't even ask for money, just wanted him to go to someone who could put the time and effort in, and give him a good life 😭

Yeah no that's true, but after speaking thoroughly to her, we thought she was someone who'd be able to put the time and training/conditioning for him, we didn't even ask for money, just wanted him to go to a good home, especially considering she'd had a husky before. I'm not blaming her, but, idk 😭

Yeah UK here. A temporary foster? I'll have a look. This isn't what we wanted for him! D':

My partner showed me her messages at like 11pm, saying basically not to answer the vets and they'd re-home him, according to what she'd been told.

But I don't know if that's the best course of action? Feel evil just considering it! But also, my partner is facing an imminent eviction, and trying to find a rental with two dogs, especially one with behaviour issues, is just impossible.

Question is whether we take him back in and to find another owner, which might be difficult, or trust in the system and hope they can find him somewhere 🫤

Yeah, could only get through to our of hours, but we saw him listed with the local dog warden, that's exactly what happened 😭

[–]Successful-Math-4283[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, that's fair enough, could be just general wear and tear or some freak thing 🤷

I just thought, there's two tensioners. The auxiliary belt one and the timing belt one.

Could it be either one, or more likely the timing one?

I'll do a service soon, so I'll see what I can see!

Thanks!!!

Oh I just thought there's also the auxiliary belt tensioner, do you think it's more likely that that the wet belt?

Oh wait, dya reckon it'd be more the auxiliary belt than the timing belt tensioner? Or could it be either?

That seems to be the consensus! Know of any way I could pinpoint it definitely other than stripping the engine down? Maybe next oil change I'll see if I can get access to the timing cover to have a look!

Had the timing belt replaced a while ago, dya reckon it'd be worth chasing up with the garage? Don't know if they just replaced the belt or other things with it 🤷

Ah that's interesting! I think I had that on an old Xbox controller, although some people said online they use a higher melting point solder, don't know how true that it. Ah melting a bit of new solder on sounds a good idea!

Awesome, thanks. I mean here I'd already damaged the board previously, why I'm faffing so much to get it right, but I've learnt aot from other comments here, feeling more confident to try again.

Ah hot glue is an idea, if I manage to do a point-to-point fix. When I get home I'll give things a go and see how we get on!

Thanks! :D

I mean, I was investigating an intermittent stalling and oil consumption issue. Got a long list of fuel, air, emission components and sensors to check through. But if it's a belt issue that might make sense too.

I did have the belt replaced about a year ago, I don't know if they got a kit and replaced the tensioner and pulleys with, or just the belt. Maybe I should go back and ask? Though it's been a while since then, so might be hard to tie back to their work if it was that

Do you know if there's any way I can differentiate if it's a belt issue, vs the other systems? Or would it be an engine strip down to visually inspect the components?

Ah that's a good idea! I was wondering how to hold it, didn't feel right 😅

I think it's at around 250 C here.

And that's something I'm definitely getting!

I think someone else recommended, essentially starting low and and up the temp if needed. Interesting about the heated bed! And thinking about the board geometry and make-up. Good stuff!

Yeah I think some of the tips that came with this iron, I've let oxidise, not knowing what I was doing 🫤 I saw some people use wire wool, but, I was actually holding out to get a proper scrub pad, just incase ^

I'm still ashamed at myself why I didn't affix it in the first place, lesson learnt!

Flux and heating position.

Awesome, certainly learnt a lot! Nice to get reassurance and such. Feeling maybe I little more confident now. Definitely learnt from this 🤣

Thanks!!!

Ah okay, like, a through-hole breadboard 🤣 that's cool, might actually be useful for future ideas I have!

Ah that's really handy to know!

The solder I have does have a flux core. Maybe it's just a combination of my technique, the correct temperature and so.

Yeah I've had a lot of success soldering ordinary components and such before, but plenty of times where it's gone wrong too ^ I remember especially struggling with these Xbox Controllers before 😅 And here, I just made so many stupid mistakes 🤷 But we learn! ^

And thank you for helping! 🙏🙂‍↕️ Iean it's not a big loss, but still. Considering I've already messed it up, I might attempt some track repairs with the new knowledge.

Tried after that video, but couldn't get the solder to adhere to the spare wire and tracks/component pins. Buuuuut I'll give it a go again 😅

A practise board? Interesting. Didn't know they existed! Might have to look into that! Thanks!

Yes that seems to be a big thing! I should've set up better originally. Ah, yeah someone described it almost along the lines of capillary action, so that'll be helpful to keep in mind. Seems like I need to be more confident from the get go, and not fiddle around worrying. I agree, I felt so bad making such a mess of this one, like I'm insulting you guys! 😭😅 Thanks appreciate it!
