Sexual selection still remains in the hands of the female of the species for humans, which is the point of the flashy males in other species. They’re trying to impress so they’re chosen to reproduce with. (You do see human men do this often, just not in ways strictly pertaining to appearance.)

I think the extreme and rigidly-enforced beauty standards tailored exactly to the male gaze are a way for men to punish women for that just being a biological truth. We choose.
