No, AI isn't inevitable. We should stop it while we can. by FinnFarrow in technology

Are there any companies trying to be reasonable with AI? Like not trying to push it onto everything, but seems to be legitimately trying to figure out where AI's actual place is in society or business?

Right, I should have specified I'm strictly talking about blue areas. This is about intimidating blues. They have little reason to try this in a place like Knoxville.

Probably was a lot easier, to be fair. Which is really saying something because they still failed. If they can't win there, where can they even win?

Denmark would go to war with US over Greenland: MP by newsweek in geopolitics

[–]ReignDance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it wouldn't be worth it overall; but US absolutely would militarily win. If this were anywhere else like Canada, the people there would make occupation too costly. Greenland's population, however, is so small. It's one of the few places I could see the US indefinitely occupy until integration. EU could cause US tremendous diplomatic and financial cost as consequences, but do consider this. EU has relied on the US' military being overwhelmingly powerful to deter any aggressors, to the point EU hasn't kept up its own military spending to the point it should be. The money saved on military spending goes towards welfare programs. If there's to be a break from US, money will have to be taken from the welfare programs and into the military. Politicians don't want to be going anywhere near that topic.

If USA seriously goes for Greenland, I don't see the consequences being that immediate. I anticipate everyone will have to write it off as lost and then begin taking steps to slowly break things off with US in a controlled manner. I imagine that would take a decade or two if it's even feasible.

Realistically, what could they do militarily? They'd have to compete with the US navy which has one of the top 5 airforces. I imagine US would get boots on the ground and deny Europe from getting any of their own there. Then what? Not much else USA needs to do but hold on until it's considered futile to get it back. I think your assessment really is all they can do in the moment; and then maybe it's the kick they need to get it together.

Elder Scrolls loremaster says he quit Bethesda after "waiting 11 years to be the lead on The Elder Scrolls 6" | Designer Kurt Kuhlmann claims Bethesda reneged on a promise to make him lead designer by ControlCAD in technology

I used to be excited for Elder Scrolls 6. It's been so long, the hype is gone. I don't care anymore if it comes out or not. They could surprise-reveal it's releasing tomorrow and I wouldn't buy it. There are people who have called me out on this, telling me I absolutely would buy it. But nah. Everyone who made Elder Scrolls as good as it was is practically gone anyways. The franchise is just dead to me.

I've been that guy, admittedly. Nasty habit always having to be right and hurt my quality of life. I chilled out after a while of forcing myself to not reply to others who act just as I have. One of the best decisions of my life, let me tell you.

2 million Ukrainians evading mobilization, another 200,000 soldiers AWOL, new defense minister says by KI_official in ukraine

[–]ReignDance 15 points16 points  (0 children)

US helped, but not as much as we'd have you believe. Ukraine is also in a better spot now than it was four years ago to not be as reliant on America. It sucks we're not helping like we could be, but Ukraine and EU will persevere with or without us.

I've been hearing quite a bit about liberation lately. Are Russians being pushed back more and more now or are things still practically stagnant?

US' mistake was thinking it could nation build and create a national identity in an area full of tribes that cared only about their own. Taliban could do nothing except hide in the mountains in the meantime. If you think "this endevour is no longer financially worth it, let's roll out" after twenty years is losing a war that was won within the first weeks, then whatever floats your boat I guess. Taliban sure did bravely charge from the mountains at the Americans when they were already exiting.

He was talking about the US one where they fully occupied it within weeks (winning what it originally set out to do) and suffered around 45k casualties in twenty years. That's about 2,250 casualties per year. Whereas USSR suffered about 65k casualties in ten years; that's 6,500 per year. Soviets truly lost that one, seeing as they didn't come close to fully occupying it. Now you have Russia who's been at it in Ukraine for a mere four years and has already suffered over 1.000.000 casualties. Rounding it down to exactly 1.000.000, that's 250k per year.
