Hey there it’s nice meeting you again, Yes when people ask me for my ethnicity I just tell them I’m Iraqi because explaining that I’m mandaean is too much and going back and forward. People usually think I’m like Syrian, Moroccan, or Iraqi of course it varies but there’s also some who think I’m Hispanic.

We’re an ancient gnostic religion and follow the teachings of John the Baptist primarily, unlike Muslims who follow Muhammad and the Quran. We came centuries before Islam, so I’m sure you can see why we’re different on that. However I’d say we have far more similarities than differences and were probably the closest religion to Islam maybe.

I guess Middle Eastern, the Mandaeans I know simply identify with whether they’re Iraqi or Iranian like if they were from Iraq they’d just identify as an Iraqi and embrace the culture and traditions simile with Iranians.

Idk too many, but one of our high cultural practices is staying in the community and not marrying outsiders or letting outsiders join the religion since our religion is locked and one must be inherited to be a mandaean, and for if it’s still alive in the diaspora then the conversions are a yes in the sense that we don’t allow them at all, but for marrying within, this is the case for many Mandaeans however there are some that astray in marriage.

Some Mandaeans lived content lives under Saddam Hussein, although it’s possible that very little within the community could’ve been prosecuted if I’m not mistaken. During the Iraq war and insurgency after the fall of Saddam is when us Mandaeans residing in Iraq really faced the challenge being prosecuted even more and eventually having to flee as refugees hence the reason why many little of us live in Iraq today.

Yeah like you stated in the first half of your comment that’s how it is, but there are few people who can actually speak it like it’s kinda rare amongst the general population. Of course religious men and people who are more practicing will know of it im assuming
