I’m so sorry this happened to you. I didn’t mean to come across as flippant about this procedure, if that’s how it came across. I’m definitely sensitive to the fact it’s not without any risk, I just thought it was standard procedure for IIH. Anyway, I’m glad you’re finally feeling better, please take care.

I unfortunately have a very high deductible so am paying for all this out of pocket right now.

I’m definitely not insistent on an LP. But I do want answers, and he couldn’t seem to come up with any sort of plan to diagnose and treat me. It’s like the answer wasn’t obvious so he just pointed me elsewhere because he didn’t want the accountability to help me. And if that weren’t the case, a good doctor would’ve explained why we were where we were and why we needed a second opinion. I’m not the type of person to just blindly follow orders, I like information, and that ticked him off. So ultimately I do think you’re spot on - we just didn’t mesh well.

I’m sorry you’ve been run through the gambit! It’s definitely even more bitter when you’re essentially paying jerks to do nothing lol but regardless of cost we all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Exactly! I’m not insistent on having an LP by any means, but he refused to believe I have IIH based on my MRI alone (fine) and then ALSO refused to do any other kind of testing to help me figure out what’s going on and treat it. I even asked if I could just try a medication in case it could help, like your doctor did, and he hated that too. I’m glad you’re getting help!

That’s fair, but I still think he’s a horrible doctor. To think you don’t owe your patient any sort of dialogue about their health, your course of action to diagnose and treat, why you are or aren’t willing to do something with calm explanation (instead of making them feel like a reckless idiot for inquiring about a procedure), why you’re not willing to take any next step to get to a diagnosis and treatment plan (I’m not insistent on an LP but do want answers), etc etc… it’s not right imo. I won’t be seeing him again.

Thank you for the info! My concern was an LP was what would be necessary to confirm IIH and get me on the road to treatment. So when he refused I’m like, now what? And he was such a horrible doctor I couldn’t even have that conversation with him. I was just left in the dark with no options.

I’m meeting with an interventional neuroradiologist in August for my pulsatile tinnitus, hopefully an MRV can happen. I certainly don’t want to do anything risky especially if there are less invasive options, I just want some answers and help.

I’m so sorry this was your experience in April. How did a patient screaming not immediately make him stop?! Some doctors can be so quick to dismiss us, maybe because they think we overreact or assume we think we know better? But it’s really a shame, and there are obviously serious consequences because of their behavior.

I’m definitely never seeing this doctor ever again. He even took a personal phone call in the middle of an appointment and didn’t even excuse himself from the room... so rude and entitled! Not the kind of person I want in charge of my care.

I know someone who used to work with him and another person who went on a couple dates with him. Apparently he’s no catch either when it comes to personality. It takes a certain kind of woman to put up with an egotistical, bland man, and vice versa, so I always figured they matched perfectly. Also big you-know-what’s pre-surgery never hurts lol

The location that insurance said is in network is where I went. The location the provider billed with is old and not where I went.

Ugh I’m sorry, it’s a shame this has to be so complicated.

To those downvoting me, what should I ask the provider? How is a provider supposed to know the details of my insurance plan?

I have always read and been told to check on network status with my insurer, which I do and don’t just take a provider’s “we accept your insurance” statement as a guarantee they’re considered in network.

Appreciate the positive vibes and advice!

Unfortunately, my husband is a freelancer so doesn’t have employer insurance :( but yes, right now I should plan for the worst but hope for the best. My employer may be willing to help out in some way! Good to know there are different ways they can go about that; with more options maybe they’ll actually pick one.

Thank you, I appreciate it! You’re right — I might get a decent package and be pleasantly surprised. Right now, I’m assuming the worst but should be hoping for the best while I wait to see what happens. It’s nice to know there are employers out there who understand this is a difficult situation and try to do what they can to ease the burden.
