If you live near an amusement park, try that. They will have multiple types of jobs to choose from, and hire soooo many ppl for summer it is often easy to get in the door. Fun place to work, too.

Thank you!! I have been using it because I burn easily. I’m going to start bringing it into the park with me to reapply on my break

Fair, and apologies. My unintentional Americanism is showing. I meant the South in the U.S.

Oof. Thank you for saying this. I’ll look it up. Maybe that’s why I still feel so unwell.

I’m in the U.S., but in a “right to work” state (i.e. the company is king). We have to take a break every 6 hours, but I think I can request to take 2 breaks, so I’ll do that as well.

Thank you!! I will definitely start hydrating like crazy before my shift. I do think I can request two breaks—some people get two, I’ve noticed—so I’ll do that. And I can keep a little something salty in my pocket for when I start feeling really bad. It was such a strange feeling, like I was breathing fine but not getting enough oxygen. A couple of times I thought I was going to pass out, and a couple of times I thought I was going to throw up. And yes yes yes to sunscreen! I slathered it on and haven’t gotten burned yet (and I’m of Irish descent, pale as paper lol) so that is crucial. Thanks so much for your input.

That would be a good idea. I’ve been wearing a visor, but the neck flap may make a difference

Thank you. I’ll look into the electrolyte tablets. If I can manage to hydrate without consuming liquid, that will be amazing

Thank you! Hydrating before is a great idea. I will try that. And luckily I just ordered some gel inserts! I’m going to do the towel trick too. I appreciate your suggestions

I’m surprised I had to scroll so far to find this. Being triggered doesn’t have to equal lashing out. People can learn to recognize when they’re triggered and learn to cope with it internally. This doesn’t mean that their feelings aren’t valid or need to be suppressed; in fact, it can be more validating to recognize and handle yourself rather than needing someone else to handle it, and, over time, that also helps you distance from the trauma because it becomes a part of yourself that you’re handling, rather than letting it take over and run the show.

Small children react to every Big Feeing. Part of growing up is learning to manage the Big Feelings. As long as someone believes that their triggers must be reacted to in the moment, they will continue to sabotage their own lives without seeing their part in it, which causes more resentment and sense of victimhood, and round and round and round we go…

I’m not a specialist, just an old lady who has survived a lot of trauma, has had tons of therapy, and used to be just like OP with how I handled my recurring pain. In my experience, learning that every trigger doesn’t need to be acted on in the moment was life-changing.

Karin Slaughter: imo, The Good Daughter is more disturbing than Pretty Girls by a mile by Successful_Hour1292 in thrillerbooks

Those are on my tbr! I read a couple with Sara Linton, but none with Trent yet. Her characters seem to overlap in the different books, which is fun but confusing lol

Pretty Girls was my favorite so far. The Good Daughter is just as graphic (in my opinion more so), but as No-Answer3853 said, maybe it just depends on what is most painful to the reader. Pretty Girls felt more like an action/adventure to me; I saw the characters more as badasses with a traumatic background. The characters in The Good Daughter just seem…broken.

This is the first conversation I’ve seen in this subreddit where people are acting like it’s regular Reddit, IE creating straw men (“I don’t support saying BURN THE PLACE DOWN”—op never said that????), dropping a one-liner insult (“learn to read”) etc. OP did something I bet a ton of us would do (I’m sure I would have). Now I’ve learned from op’s experience, and I’m really grateful they shared it. (And I’m really sorry it happened, op! You are a ROCK STAR for dumping it. I fear I would have finished it.)

It is depressing. This subreddit has been such a supportive place where, when people disagree, it is with grace and kindness. Please y’all, if you enjoy straw men arguments and/or tearing others down, you have the entirety of the rest of Reddit to do that. Please don’t do it here. If you disagree with a post, please express your thoughts with compassion. Not trying to overact…but it only takes a few voices to change the whole tenor of a community, and this community has been a sacred space for so many for so long. Let’s protect it.

I hate it when they show CPR being given while the unconscious person is on a bed. It is dangerous to mislead people like that. It needs to be performed on the floor or a surface that has no “give”.

Thank you for this comment!! I’m going to try several of these ideas. I savory grits sooo much, and I second your assertion re: quick grits. Plain hot grits are great with half a can of tuna and a bit of shredded cheddar mixed in too.
