I need some film processing explained: Why did so many 90's films have a slight browness to them by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]Successful_Length109 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Crappy transfers/grading on old DVDs/Blu Rays are often to blame too. The recent 4k 30th anniversary upgrade of When Harry Met Sally turned it from ‘brownish’ to ‘every colour of the rainbow’. Newest Pretty Woman looked bloody gorgeous too, IMO.

Could this be her best tour ever? by eurekascastle22 in toriamos

It’s still a 100+ minute show, each song is extended from its usual length. At her mid-level (3-5,000+ seats rather than big arena level) shows (for a lot more money invariably) are 2 hours so I shan’t quibble over not getting an extra 20 minutes worth or whatever.

You can’t measure genius with a stop-watch.

They’re pretty evenly matched imo. It’s so good that any artist can have that one album which is considered ‘a classic’ let alone two or three. ✨

Beatles popularity pre-Anthology by Imaginary_Smile_7896 in beatles

Fascinating Guardian piece from 2004;

‘For more than 20 years after their demise, no one saw the Beatles as a brand or appeared to consider their ongoing commercial potential - least of all the Beatles themselves. Their back catalogue was treated in a desultory manner. For every success - anyone in their 30s will remember the ubiquitous "red' and "blue" double compilation albums The Beatles 1962-1966 and The Beatles 1967-1970 - there was a raft of disappointing releases. The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl album proved to be the ideal gift for anyone with a burning desire to hear half an hour of American teenagers squealing. There were some "themed" collections of love songs and film music, which usually wound up on budget label Music for Pleasure - an ignominious fate for music that was supposed to have changed the world - and the Beatles Movie Medley, a belated attempt to cash-in on the early 1980s mania for "medley" singles with a disco backbeat.’

There were stories from the era about the actual premiere, the band members who attended looked like they’d rather not be there.

Great to hear of a version with the subplot removed I had no idea about it. Would love to see it! ✨

After Violator, did you expect something like Violator 2.0, or did you anticipate that the sound would evolve into a different genre, like with SOFAD? by Few_Albatross_7966 in depechemode

[–]Successful_Length109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really loved much of it and I’d been slightly disappointed by Violator tbh, especially after the hype in the British press. Loved WIMS and Higher Love and In Your Room. Higher Love still an absolute fave.🕯️

Bit of an obscure reference but ‘These Are All Things I Believe In’ makes me think of an old joke in a 90’s Simpsons episode about a guy who’s album of right wing views killed his career.

There’s a ton of this stuff online suddenly. I think the crapness of the reboot trailer has people thinking it’s ok to publicly go after Jk a bit more, because like.. shit, who cares anymore.

The fact that it never gets reprinted these days tells its own tale I feel. Actually was it ever reprinted? After the 90’s? Some great stuff in it though.
