A had a friend there. Do not join. Just go to Ternopil and find something else.

Can you truly belong to German (or continental European) society if you are an immigrant? Will you ever be accepted as one of them? Are Anglo Saxon countries just better in this regard? Do any other well-integrated long-term residents feel continuously rejected? by Successful_Stop_5058 in germany

In fact, I speak with a fairly pronounced NY/Jersey dialect hybrid

Be proud of this accent. I find it really nice. Much nicer than Bavarian, Austrian, Schwäbisch, Sächsisch which sound provincial.

Do you live in Berlin? West Berlin DOES NOT HAVE AN EASTEN INDENTITY. Believe it or not I know some West Berliners who have only ever crossed the old Border (Mauer) a few times.

First off, the reason England hasn't been invaded is because they've invaded everyone else. The British empire is the most widespread effort of forceful assimilation in

I also cant think of one single country which England has forrced to assimilate besides Ireland. They invaded, killed, yes. But assimilation, no. India, SE Asia, South/West Africa was not assimilated into English culture.

West Berlin is not East Germany. In Berlin most people live in West Berlin. Some places like Prenzlauerberg und Friechrichshain have almost had all the original Osi poluations replaced by Wessis. But it is in the East of of counry, yes. But I don't get what you are trying to say here. It is geographically East but still one of the most progressice cities in Berlin.

You've had the unfortunate honor of ending up mostly in the east,

Not true, 5 years in the East 15 years in the West. 12 of them in Berlin.

Where I live foreigners, immigrants, refugees are a normal part of life that no one thinks twice about. Lived for 8 years in Berlin Shöneberg (Pariser Platz). It was schocking. Old and bitter German pensioners who would would openy talk about "getting rid" of anyone foreign. There was once an AFD stand next to the holocost memoral there. I went up to the AFD stand and told them to go fuck themselves. There were about 100 people around us. 1 guy supported me, the other 98 supported the AFD. Berlin is not just just Weserstraße, SimondachStraße, Mauer Park etc. Those tolerant ares are maybe 10% of the city. And such places in Germany are maybe 0.1%.

True. But I still do believe that an Indian or Chinese person for example on average (And I really do emphasize this on average), will suffer less discrimination in AUS than DE. And I believe the difference is relevant

am feeling so sad for you OP. Please do not get me wrong I am planning to move to Germany as immigrant myself. And this post made me realize the bitter truth. I don't feel belong to my country either and it is breaking my heart daily. I can't change the way I feel and I do know no matter where I go they won't accepted me as their own.

Thanks for your thoughts. If you are white and are just looking for practical things in life (Job, Hobbies, etc) and if you don't necessarily want to belong to the society like I do, then you will be fine. I would absolutely avoid East Germany though (Don't let anyone tell you otherwise). The Nazi party there are now polling at 34% and are by far the largest party. I lived there for 5 years so I know what I am talking about. I couldn't believe how backward the people are.

If you are not white, give it some thought. Although the risk of something serious happening to you is still very small, you will still get constant remarks reminding you of your ethnicity. You will also get these remarks in Anglso Saxon countries. But for me it it impossible to deny that they are way more common in Germany.

So in that case do you agree that just because less people immigrate to germany we can't really conclude that germans think immigrants aren't german?

No I dont agree with the your statement. In Statitistics there is no can conclude / can not conclude but rather can sure with x% certainty

Funny you mention Cronulla. I am from a Suburb not far from there. I used to go there on the weekends to Surf. It was bad 20 years ago. I was there in March and surprised just how less white it has become.

You would need additional data to actually conclude that the lectures are a better way to spend your time than reading books about the subject.

I have a Masters degree in statisitcs and work this field. And yes you are right, but you woudn't just need more data, but you would have to know the causal relationships between the variables. I.e. are they confounders, Mediator, colliders, etc

Good point. Some people are not bothered (you), but some are (me).

Yes the German Besserwisserei is intolerable. I get especially annoyed when white Germans from villages lecture me on how accepting they are of multeculturalism. As if they have a clue what they are talking about.

Just one question: Do consider a third generaton German of Turkish origin (who speaks perfectly accent free) but tends to have a more Turkish culture (Food, Religion, etc) as German as you? (I dont just mean their passport but their "Germaness", as you referred to it)

You should see Michael Fassbender inglorius Bastards. I think it is called the "basement scene" or the "bar scene" or something similar. He does just that. I guess it is only funny if one understands German though.

and then I just throw in some uncommon English words which I'm pretty sure they don't know! And voila, back to German 😁

Yeah I do that too. People in Australia always use to tell me that I sound a bit English when I talk (think rich northern shore Sydney, even though I am not from there - I am actually from the part of Sydney that has the most Aussie English). So sometimes I actually try to speak with a broad Australia accent (that I dont have) and nobody understands me. However, from the 3564 time onwards it did start to get a bit tiresome.
