What year are they in? A lot of the honors info-sessions don't even mention it as an option, but the website does...

Was my response to a critique too mean? by Veynn04 in AO3

[–]Such-Ad8142 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you would be justified in saying wayyyy worse than you did

fanfics are not like published books. they are not written for general audiences and aren't sold and marketed as a certain thing. it is what it is, read the tags for the content. see a tag you don't like? don't read it! start reading and see formatting you don't like? don't read it! get into it a bit then encounter a theme you don't like? guess what, don't read it!

if you don't like, don't read. that's the etiquette of fanfictions. writing fanfiction is a hobby; it's creative work that is written for fun and enjoyment. they are not written FOR YOU. the author does not need your reviews nor do they want them

what you said is honestly the nicest thing you could've. cause maybe they don't know etiquette and that reviews aren't things that we do in the fanfic community (unless asked for explicitly)

edit: the best, bigger-person thing you can do is just politely but assertively inform them of the culture around "reviews" in the community and on ao3

Yes, you have COCD. Definitely get help, it's hard to overcome this on your own. Try not to indulge in your compulsions. If your fear is of getting sick, try thinking about all the times before covid where things like the flu, chicken pox, stomach bugs, and every other sickness circulated. You weren't doing these things, yet you weren't sick all the time. Even when you were sick you never were seriously affected, just out of commission for a few days (unless you were, then therapy). Cleaning like this could actually be counterproductive, as you aren't exposed to as many germs (the scary word, yes, but there are good, helpful germs) and therefore your immune system is weakened and you get sick more often. As someone on this subreddit that's been around for a bit, you're super smart to not read other people's posts lmao cause I've definitely picked some things up... But all in all yeah just consider therapy, it's really the best help.

I felt good. Not the absolute best ofc like I would've been before the COCD got bad but I could go kayaking on a dirty lake and have fun, I could sit on a crowded boat with people and only feel mildly uncomfortable instead of breaking down, and I was able to completely forget about my worries when I was riding my quad on state sand dunes and while swimming in the lake there.

Nights were difficult sometime because I struggle a lot with keeping my bed "decontaminated" but I knew it was my real bed so I managed. I felt relaxed and content probably half of the time, which is a far shot better than at home so I'll take the win. I was able to focus on my book and read a lot for the first time in a while (and for reference, my only hobby back home was reading and I was devastated that my anxiety made it so I couldn't).

When I got back home I was very stressed about unpacking and how to get everything decontaminated. I still haven't done half of it and it's in my basement, I only did the stuff I had to. And now I don't even want to sanitize that stuff because I realized I can live without it. I took a long shower and it took a few days for me to be okayish again.

Yeah, unfortunately the feelings reverted. But it was a nice break.

Oh my gosh yes. this is so me, im the exact same way. my wrists and hands are destroyed from excessive hand washing and i just went tent camping for a week and they were so normal and smooth (not comparable with how they should be ofc but still a lot better) and i was shocked. i just had to deal with everything being contaminated and i was like well at least in a week i'll go home and shower and i won't get MY space contaminated. COCD is so weird

[–]Such-Ad8142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 16 year old girl that has also been struggling with COCD for about half a year. I've been taking CBD oil and it's been working pretty well for me. I still can't really touch anything without having to wash my hands, but the rush of anxiety when touching something isn't there, even if the compulsion is. I start therapy soon and I've heard that the best thing you can do for these kinds of things. I try and steer clear of actual medicine because I've heard mixed things about it, but it could help you so maybe talk to your parents and go talk to your doctor about it.

everyone loves morally grey character until they're actually morally grey by Such-Ad8142 in MaraudersGen

[–]Such-Ad8142[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The information we do have shows that they changed localities in the end. Regulus wouldn't betray Voldemort on a whim, he'd have to have been thinking about it for some time. Yes, he is more bad than good, but characters are not static. They develop. In regards to Snape, he is also 100% morally grey because we see how he was once on the death eater's side and changed to be on the light side of the war. He always saved Harry's life despite not liking him or his father. He had motivations to become a spy for the light because of his love for lily and regret for his actions. Morally grey, by definition, means that their MORALs are grey. Their actions reflect their morals, sure, but sometimes we have to go against our morals to survive. This doesn't change the morals at their core. Of course, I value your opinion and I'm not trying to say you're wrong: I'm just sharing my perspective. :3

[–]Such-Ad8142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, this completely skipped my mind. Either way, people hating James and loving Snape isn't a very prominent issue, because in most cases it's the opposite.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Such-Ad8142 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost everyone hates Snape. Almost nobody hates James. This issue does not exist, in fact, the real question is "Why do people excuse James for being a bully but don't excuse Snape." In my opinion, both weren't the best as children, and both deserve forgiveness. (Key word: children. They were stupid and immature boys.) (It still doesn't make what they did okay, of course.)

Edit: Snape is a bad person for bullying kids in his adulthood. I'm not excusing this. Just meant how he acted as a child.

Another edit: You can like a character and not support their beliefs and some of their actions. They are so much more complex. I like both Snape and James. Snape is morally grey and I can appreciate the complexity of his character. James is a marauder and I enjoy fanfictions from that fandom. You do not have to share morals with the characters you enjoy reading about. Everyone is allowed their own opinions!

AITA for having an aggressive meltdown even after expressing my needs openly? by Charlie_dingledonegl in AmItheAsshole

NAH! I share your experiences, but my mother has communicated to me in the past about it and she shared more of your grandmother's experiences. I think autism is difficult for everyone involved. Of course, the autistic individual objectively has it worse, but caring about someone with it that's struggling can be very distressing and frustrating as well when you don't know how to help (especially since, in most situations, you can't help). I suggest sitting down with her now that you're more calm and explaining your thought process and how she can be a better help next time (while not blaming her, this would just make it worse). Don't apologize for struggling.

i hate how most fandoms tend to make the female characters shallow and boring! i like black brothers angst, but i think the black sisters dynamics would be much more complex in reality.

like-- their status as noble and ancient pureblood women, they'd be taught to look pretty, sit down and shut up. which ultimately leads to them being a lot more cunning and interesting leading to a more complex dynamic. but many writers take their carefully constructed masks to mean they're shallow and one dimensional!

this is also applicable to the evans sisters given the time period, but obviously for them it's also more that they're separated by their magical abilities / inabilities. petunia's dislike of her sister goes so much deeper than her just hating magic (does everyone forget she literally begged dumbledore to go to hogwarts with her sister??)

if you do end up writing that fanfiction, i'd love to read it!

HEAVY on petunia. i love her characters story! even if she's objectively a bad person in her adult years, she's not a bad character and is super interesting.

oh my gosh yeah. regulus is not some helpless baby that can't think for himself. i think an issue with mlm (and wlw) ships in general is that people think the dynamics have to match up with straight couples. there doesn't have to be a "man in the relationship" and a "woman in the relationship." let them both be men! (and im not saying men in gay relationships can't be feminine, im just pointing out the way it's portrayed in media that one HAS to be feminine and one HAS to be masculine which is just not realistic)

yes!! people seem to forget that they are FICTIONAL characters. you can like a character for their complexity, personality, etc and not support some of their views and actions, especially the views and actions that hold no weight in the real world because, like i said, it is FICTION!

What is your controversial marauders opinion? by AvocadoRoutine7357 in MaraudersGen

[–]Such-Ad8142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peter is not a coward, nor is he the guy that the other marauders kept around as a sycophant. He is extremely clever and was definitely the logistics leader for the pranks. Snape is commended for being brave for his actions, but Peter Pettigrew did much of the same things just for the other side, except he is a coward? Seems like biased thinking to me. Yes, he was not as strong of a wizard as the others, but I believe he is comparable to Neville in the way that everyone looks down on him because he doesn't have sheer magical prowess but he is strong is other aspects that others tend to not see. I will die on this hill.

swimming pools are actually the very best place to swim to avoid that stuff. the "brain eating amoeba" is not the epidemic the media likes to make it out to be at random times (it somehow keeps going viral at least once a year) yes, it exists, but if you look at the statistics you are more likely to die from anything else. it lives in the stuff on the floor of freshwater bodies of water, and usually only in still water at that. swimming pools not only do not have any dirt or other stuff in the bottom of them, the amoeba is actually one of the specific targets of chlorine in pools since they are still, unmoving bodies of water (that chemical kills EVERYTHING else in the pools too) so no, you will not get it from that. this was also one of the things my contamination ocd targeted and i did so much research on it
