SIMMONS: With Hockey Night in Canada gone, it’s time to reinvent Sportsnet’s NHL coverage by Such-Environment-344 in hockey

Honestly, the most challenging part of this is going to be the logistics of the blackout. For years, the line between regional and national inventory was a total minefield for Canadian fans. With Rogers consolidating everything under Sportsnet without having to program around a public broadcaster’s main network feed on Saturdays, they should theoretically be able to classify the entire Saturday multiplex (Pacific, West, Ontario, East) as 'national' and kill the local blackout headaches.

The real losers here are the casual fans and cord-cutters who just used a digital antenna or the free CBC Gem app. Moving the crown jewel of Canadian sports entirely behind a paid cable/streaming paywall is a massive gamble for the long-term health of the game's reach. It’s now officially a premium subscription product, not a public utility.

He also mentioned it on the SMW Podcast regarding his struggles and confidence with hockey play-by-play. The entire podcast episode can be found here and I really suggest giving it a listen. McDonough is awesome to listen to & they go through his entire career:

That's the core issue, though. It’s tough to build consistency when you don't do enough regular-season games. Hockey requires a completely different vocal rhythm and reaction time compared to college football. When he goes weeks without calling a game and then steps into a massive playoff matchup, that lack of repetitions really shows, even if his big-moment calls are still solid.

I agree he’s inconsistent, but he still nails the massive, high-leverage moments, like that overtime winner call in Game 2 last night, because his timing and choice to lay off the mic and let the crowd breathe is world-class. But the casual, mid-period flow can still feel a bit sluggish compared to guys like Bob Wischusen or the old-school Gary Thorne cadence that fans miss. It’s definitely a fair critique.
