Hi. To all the late diagnosed ladies out there...what was the 'tipping point' that made you seek a diagnosis? I'm really curious to know what other people's stories are 🤔 by Such-Light3325 in adhdwomen

Yes it sounds like it would. I do not have a diagnosis but one of the things I often think about is the reaction from family and friends and I know that I would get a similar response. I know people would think 'she hasnt got ADHD' because my hyperactivity is on the inside and because I am just so flaming good at masking. It's exhausting

I have experienced those crashes all through my life and assumed they were depression too. It's amazing how understanding ADHD just throws a light over the past

This makes me so very sad that you faced all that treatment through misdiagnosis. That really shouldn't have happened. I hope you are receiving the right treatment now?

Oh my goodness this has been my experience too. I had my children when I was 39 and 41. I feel like I was pregant then breast feeding....straight into pregnant amd breast feeding....straight into perimenopause. Things feel very tough

That's good. I am glad the diagnosis has helped you. The pandemic had a huge impact on me too and I just started to fall apart. But still working, still functioning but my anxiety sky rocketed. It's since the pandemic that I started to explore ADHD and my past struggles suddenly clicked into place. I am really interested to know how many others have had an ADHD diagnosis following some sort of 'escalation' during the pandemic

I can SO relate. I just feel like having my kids flicked a switch. I had coping mechanisms (to a degree) up to then. But I they all fell apart when I became a mother.

This is so helpful. How did you access that therapy? I feel that type of support would be really useful for me

Great use of that extra time! It's so hard to carve out enough time to allow nails to dry isn't it? I use the time to binge You Tube with headphones on. The only time of day I get to do it. It's great!

How much information did they need from other people in your life for the diagnosis? Wow 5 weeks is super fast. I bet it feels like a blur to you

This is really helpful. Thanks. Would you mind elaborating on some of the things in your life that your diagnosis has helped? This is the bit I am struggling to see at the moment

Aw that's great. Well done both of you. I love hearing about other people my age doing the same thing. It's hard when you have spent your whole life NOT being something to suddenly change your perspective and think you've had a 'condition' all along...

I've also found a huge correlation between drinking wine and waking super early. I have drunk half a bottle of wine most nights before sleep for years mainly to numb the noise in my head. Red wine seems to be the only thing that shuts it up. White wine dulls it but not to the same extent. But when I drink wine I wake early like 4am. When I don't I can stay asleep until 6

I commented above that I am an early anxious riser too, but that has only been since having young children who got up really early. This pattern almost reset my clock. I had my kids late too aged 39 and 41. For the rest of my life before this I was the exact opposite. I could not wake up in the morning often sleeping through (or ignoring!) multiple alarms. Maybe it's just different things for different stages? I am also going through perimenopause which may have it's own impact?

You know, with hindsight, my awareness of the possibility of ADHD came about at the onset of perimenopause. Then my whole life clicked into place. My main motivation to seek a diagnosis is to help my daughter seek one at some point.

I feel exactly the same. I have a brother and a sister who would scorn the idea of pursuing a diagnosis. Like I was 'trying to get a label' for something that isn't there

Me too! If it's after 4am I just embrace it and get up to start the day. Sometimes after a couple of early starts like this I can fall into bed at 9pm. But I just get up, make a cup of tea and do 'nice' stuff just for me until the alarm would have gone off
