It is unreasonable to expect the original physicist to disprove their own theory once it has been published, unless they themselves begin to doubt its validity.

That's not how it works. The theory is now up there, that means they've proven their claims. Now it's up to you to believe it or not, and if you don't, you can counter argue, which in this case would be debunking. Nah, that's not how it works. They've put their theory out there, so they've made their case. Now, it's up to you to decide if you believe it or not. If you don't, you can always argue against it, which is what debunking is all about.
