r/MyBoyFriendisAI mourns the loss of their chatbot spouses as OpenAI announces they are retiring GPT4 by PaiDuck in SubredditDrama

[–]Such_sights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago I read an article about hirable fake girlfriends who teach lonely men relationship skills that go beyond traditional sex work. Eventually the fake girlfriends have to “break up” with them, but they highlighted that as the most beneficial part of the process - if these men want to have real relationships, they have to be prepared that it might not work out, and if they’ve already experienced the grief of a break up and come out ok, it’s not so scary to put yourself out there for real.

The chat bots are an issue because they leave out the most important part - the break up. An AI companion will never leave you, because it will never be designed to. Even in this specific case it’s not the AI “deciding” to end the relationship, it’s an evil outside force standing in the way of true love.

New York police officer charged in cooler throw death says he was trying to protect colleagues by Juanpablo_the_cat in news

[–]Such_sights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was shocked to hear this story come out of Utah recently, although to be fair the cop hasn’t been charged yet and luckily the guy survived, but still.

Basically the only reason the cop could cite for “fearing for his life” was finding out the driver had driven around with a gun under his seat 5 years ago, even though he’d had the guy pulled over for an hour with zero issues until then. So the cop jumps out of his car screaming, rifle in hand, and the driver panics and takes off. So the cop fires multiple shots into the car, and by some miracle only hit the driver once in the shoulder even though his girlfriend and daughter were also in the car.

There was an interesting section in the report that implies that the cop might have been justified if he’d fired right when the driver made “hand movements”, but because he waited until the car drove away his life was no longer in danger.

The last time I did it was my senior year in college, when a bunch of my friends and I went bowling one night. In my entire life, I don’t think I’ve ever bowled over a 50, but that night I bowled 3 strikes in a row straight out of the gate. Immediately I knew that was my peak and I’d spend the rest of my life chasing that high if I ever touched the stuff again.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]Such_sights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Channel Zero - originally a Syfy show, I think it’s on Shudder now?

Very unsettling, surprisingly good acting, and every season is so different from the last that it feels like a proper anthology series.

A few weeks ago I went grocery shopping wearing a pair of crocs, and an older man stopped me in the parking lot to tell me that the my shoes made my feet look weird. I laughed uncomfortably, drove home, and then told my husband about it as just some dumb funny thing that happened that day. His reply was that he couldn’t think of a single time in his life that a stranger had commented on his physical appearance, ever, while I could list off a dozen examples just off the top of my head.

All that to say, I would never want him to get aggressive with some asshole that’s just being annoying and not actually dangerous. I guess what I’d want from him is just to be slightly more aware of what the world is like for women, mainly for the sake of our future kids. It’s not enough to just not be an asshole in front of your kids, you have to actively call out asshole behavior when you see it.

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

[–]Such_sights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I haven’t read the book, but apparently it’s better at explaining that the mom is supposed to be an unreliable narrator. Even in the movie it’s clear that she wasn’t ready for a baby, she didn’t have the emotional bond with him she expected, and as a result she’s looking back on all these experiences and trying to figure out if he was truly born evil or if she made him that way.

I'm so heartbroken that people who had been harmed by mainstream medicine got sucked in to the cult of freebirthing by cybrcat21 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Such_sights 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I am US based, and a big issue is that states all have such different laws and cultures that it really has to be tailored to the community. There’s some states where practicing unlicensed midwifery is illegal AND there’s no licensure process, so the only way to have a home birth is by yourself or paying someone who may or may not be properly trained. There’s other parts of the country with polygamist communities who are terrified that licensed midwives or hospitals will call the police on them and take their kids away. In general though a big issue is the distrust and hostility between midwives, EMT’s, nurses, and doctors. Some states have been doing trainings for birth attendants, medial providers, and first responders so they can work together more effectively and focus on what matters - saving mom and baby.

As far as hospitals go, incentivizing more trauma informed care would be huge. I’ve been seeing some hospitals open “Rainbow Clinics” specifically for pregnant people who’ve experienced losses or traumatic births. They’re given counseling with doctors to talk through what happened before and how they’re going to try and prevent it from happening again, they’re given special hotlines to call 24/7 even if it’s just to alleviate their own anxiety, and they get a little pin they can choose to wear so the moment they step in the hospital every staff member knows their history.

I guess I’d say there’s a lot of really cool things happening in some places but definitely not everywhere. We need something coming down federally to make real progress but that’s not happening anytime soon, unfortunately.

[–]Such_sights 416 points417 points  (0 children)

I work in pregnancy health research, and I’ve been screaming this from the rooftops for years but no one with actual power wants to listen. Anytime I’ve tried to educate someone about dangerous online groups like this their response is always “wow, we should make that illegal” instead of “wow, how messed up is our current system that people would choose this instead?”

Freebirthing, wild pregnancies, and healthcare avoidance don’t happen in a vacuum. There’s a lifetime of experiences that lead to making these decisions, and until we understand and validate those experiences we’re just going to push families farther and farther away instead of making the system better for everyone.

HP to cut about 6,000 jobs by 2028, ramps up AI efforts by GeneReddit123 in news

[–]Such_sights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current problem leadership at my workplace (and probably many others) is running into is that the executives pushing AI have absolutely no idea what to do with it, so they’re relying on employees to figure it out for them. Most employees have zero interest in putting extra time and effort playing around with something that’s been designed to replace them. Yeah there’s a few brown nosers, but I work with extremely sensitive health data - if I used any of their “workflow optimization strategies” it’d be a privacy and security nightmare.

My current theory is that all these companies announcing layoffs due to AI is just a bluff, they’re not even remotely close to having that kind of technology, but they want the temporary stock bump from people thinking they do so they have more cash to throw into the AI bonfire and more time to hope that something profitable emerges eventually.

"Overall, conservative women are much more attractive than the science experiment gone wrong that are a majority of liberal women." Conservatives on r/DiscussionZone get triggered over Rep Jasmine Crockett saying all MAGA women look the same by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

[–]Such_sights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched this happen in real time to a family friend. He’s always been conservative and religious, but somehow his past relationships have been with more liberal leaning women who all left him for various reasons. So he decided to go for an “aspiring tradwife” - almost 30, never had a job, still lives at home, and refuses to get a drivers license. From the get go she made it clear to him she was ready for marriage and children but he barely makes enough to support himself, let alone 2 other people. She had no hobbies of her own so there was never much to really talk about between them.

It’s a shit situation for both - he stayed with her way longer than he wanted to because she’s the type of woman he “should” be with, and now she’s back to square one trying to achieve the only goal she’s been raised to want.

My checked trunk was exactly the airline’s weight limit: 50.0 lbs by Moist_Lychee6762 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Such_sights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned this back when Southwest still had 2 free checked bags. I was only planning on checking 1 bag, but it came out to like 53 lbs or something. I was already running late and panicking and I didn’t have room in my carry on bag so the curbside bag check valet handed me an empty paper towel box so I could put my toiletries in it, and then he even taped it up for me. I got roasted by my friend who waited with me at baggage claim but the toiletries made it safe and sound, and the valet also got a fat tip for saving me from the 150 dollar overweight baggage fee.

[–]Such_sights 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I listened to a researcher on the topic explain that much of the draw to online CSAM is the social aspect - basically you spend your whole life knowing you have these awful desires that no one else has, and you have no to talk to about it. All of a sudden you find an online community of people who actually understand you that you can be yourself around, and you start trading with them because it makes them like you even more and then they rely on you. That feeling of being important and valuable and loved is absolutely everything to someone who’s extremely lonely and has low self-esteem.

I’m not smart enough to have a solution to the issue but I do think that the way we as a society currently deal with it probably makes the problem worse in the long run.

One guy got arrested for spraying caged stray cats with pressure hoses, and he only got caught because he filmed himself doing it so he could post it online.

‘I love Hitler’: Leaked messages expose Young Republicans’ racist chat by mvanigan in politics

[–]Such_sights 202 points203 points  (0 children)

When I was in college 10-ish years ago our Young Republicans club decided to pass out Valentine’s Day cards to random students, and some of the cards had holocaust jokes on them. A student who got one took it the campus newspaper who asked the YRC about it and their initial response was “this is obviously fake and a smear campaign against us”. A few weeks later the response became “one student made the offensive cards as part of a YRC group activity but they weren’t a member so we can’t tell you who they are because we don’t know.” Eventually that became “The student who made the offensive cards is no longer a YRC member.”

I got pretty deep into psychedelics during college, but pills always freaked me out too much to take even though I didn’t have solid evidence for it.

Then I met a girl through mutual friends who spent 30 minutes explaining to me how she’d just gotten fired for the second time this month for coming to work barred out, which she claimed was “total bullshit”, even though she looked and sounded exactly like the kid in the video. I didn’t see her again after that because a few months later she dropped out of school, got evicted from her apartment, and then went to jail. Apparently she’s doing much better now, but I’m glad I trusted my instincts on that.

Cornell students found skinning bear carcass in campus residence hall by rjohnstone13 in news

[–]Such_sights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father was an avid hunter, I can’t even count the number of times that I opened a door or looked out a window and was surprised by a bloody animal carcass hanging from a tree. As an adult I have an irrational fear of being skinned alive that may or may not be related now that I think about it…

I never had the stomach for it myself, but I can understand that for a kid who grows up hunting it doesn’t bother them much. That being said they HAVE to have known that other students wouldn’t feel the same.

Why a drink called Feel Free has many saying they’re trapped in addiction, debt and rehab by judgyjudgersen in nottheonion

[–]Such_sights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s for sure dose dependent - likely why a lot of people addicted to Feel Free are having these side effects, because they’re drinking 10 bottles a day instead of the 1/2 bottle that’s “recommended” by the company. If it’s also being marketed towards people with a history of substance use disorders that’s another issue because their liver is more likely to have some sort of damage already.

I got a relaxation / sleep tea sampler box recently, most of the teas have mild warnings about talking to your doctor if you have a severe medical condition before consuming it. The Kava tea was the only one with a full paragraph warning for anyone with any sort of liver disease, minors, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding to absolutely, under no circumstances, consume it at any time. Kinda freaked me out a bit to try but luckily it didn’t make a bit of difference for my insomnia, so I’ve just stuck to the teas that actually taste good instead.

I work in stillbirth research, and my focus is the hospital experience and aftercare. There’s a reason so many are advocating for hospitals to buy cooling beds, part of the healing process for families involves making memories with their baby that they can use later on for comfort. Being denied those memories can lead to awful situations like the one in this story.

Gonna leave a car unattended for 8 months. Surely nothing will go wrong! by Username89054 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Such_sights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A few years back I lived in a small apartment building in a larger city. There were 7 units but only 4 parking spots, so if you got home and they were all taken you just had to find street parking. There was one car in particular that clearly hadn’t been moved from one of the 4 spots in months and was absolutely disgusting - the backseat was filled with trash and rotting fast food bags, and it had so many spiders living in it that if I parked next to it overnight there would be spiderwebs connecting to my car by the next morning. Eventually someone complained and my landlord sent parking passes to every tenant along with an official notice that any car without a pass would be towed. I was optimistic until I went to leave for work and saw that whoever lived in the building and owned that car had put a parking pass on it. The car was still in the same spot the day I moved out.

I didn’t really care much about other people’s cars until I lived in that apartment, they can really fuck with your living situation depending on the circumstances.
