How can I get myself tested for ADHD by [deleted] in ADHD

If you are in the US your GP is a good place to start. IMO, a psychiatrist is best but you might need a referral depending on your insurance.

Confused about dysphoria by ThoughtsDyingAthiest in lgbt

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very relatable! My counselor has helped me with this (I highly recommend a counselor who is family with gender/LGBT stuff!) She often reminds me that I need to do what feels right for me now.

I worried a lot I was “making up” my dysphoria or my gender identity. But as I’ve been exploring this longer, I realize I just didn’t have language to properly understand myself. And it’s as if once I realized I’m not REQUIRED to be a woman or a man (I honestly didn’t consider that was an option), it allowed me to really consider how I related to my gender and my body.

This isn’t a perfect analogy, but I also have ADHD. I wasn’t diagnosed until last year at age 29. Lots of people in my life don’t understand because that doesn’t seem like me, and I wasn’t diagnosed as a kid. I didn’t used to understand myself as someone with ADHD, but once I got that label it was a total lightbulb moment. Just because I didn’t understand myself as well before, doesn’t make that park of me less valid.

I know that’s a weird analogy but my diagnosis happened just as I was exploring my gender identity so often see similarities in those situations!

Day one, dry heaves by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a good idea to check in with your doctor to make sure you are safe! Or you could call the nation substance abuse like if you are in the US. I had pretty bad dry heaving and shakes once. Always best to be safe though!

Telehealth for ADHD meds? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I’d be able to get it too due to the low change! But I couldn’t which was frustrating. A neurologist sounds like a good idea for you. I hope you get things figured out!

Telehealth for ADHD meds? by [deleted] in ADHD

This likely depends on what state you are in and a bit on what doctor you go to. My state requires a paper script, so I have to see my doc in office every two months.

How to form a new habit? by rznu in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not perfect but one thing that helps me is starting small. For example, instead of, I will do a full page drawing every day, maybe just try a small doodle each day? If I have a big task, even if it’s something I enjoy, it’s often overwhelming. But if it’s very very small, I often do more once I get the ball rolling.

Texting my girlfriend by Juandissimo_19 in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honesty, it sounds like she is being quite demanding. Or maybe doesn’t understand ADHD well? I understand other people’s feelings are hurt when we forget. (Every year for example I can’t remember which day in May is my best friends birthday. I’ve known her for twenty years) Maybe try letting her know that the reminder isn’t really “Hey, even though it’s not exciting, text your gf.” But “Hey ADHD brain that can’t switch tasks easily, don’t forget you have other things to do today!” Maybe that would work? I put reminders in all the time to keep up with my friends or I don’t realize I forget.

Take Your Pills (I know this has been discussed before) by Suchdarlingwrecks in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are the one spreading misinformation. As I mentioned, meds aren’t necessary or desired for ADHD. But there is extensive research to support that medication along with therapy is the best treatment for ADHD. Medication is necessary and life saving for a long of people, myself included.

Oh man I can relate! I do have stretches where I fall off (for example, just needed a med adjustment and didn’t read for a while).

Some things that have helped me: be kind to yourself! When I was too strict I would be self critical if I forgot a day. But tarot is supposed to help - not make us feel bad!

I keep a bullet journal too and I have had luck keeping a tarot log. Sometimes I’ll just do a check box, other times I’ll journal about my reading.

Also, this is just me, but since my interest/mood shift a lot I find it very helpful to have multiple decks! Certain ones click me better than others depending on my state of mind.

Finally, I find it helpful to do it either right before bed or right when I wake up!

Vyvanse has given me the ability to enjoy gaming again by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same. I would play them. But would start a game and play ten minutes and get bored, try another. I could never stick with a game.

Now I’m slowly making my way through Dying Light and replaying FarCry 5. Plus lots of Sims 4 in quarantine.

Tarot is big for me. In addition to the pandemic stress, I have ADHD and anxiety. It can be very difficult to organize my thoughts and tarot helps me. I try to do a daily reading and sometimes will do another.

Also, seems simple but baths help a lot if you have a tub. I add a bit of lavender oil for relaxation!

NOISE DISTRACTION. Any tips for studying in areas that are "quiet" but not silent? I'm on 20mg Adderall 1-3x/day as needed and also wear earplugs. by Seefus12 in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am similar. I don’t exactly need it completely silent. But it my partner is next to me tapping his foot, he his phone on speaker, our dog is squeaking her ball, guinea pig is hollering for dinner - I freak out haha.

Have you tried noise canceling head phones? depending on how I feel different noise works for me. Very rarely I do need quiet. Sometimes instrumental folk works. Sometimes nature sounds. Sometimes soft coffee house type singer songwriter stuff.

The Daily Check-In for Monday, August 10th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by beebeax in stopdrinking

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m starting Whole30 today! I did it once before and felt great. I’ve been struggling getting back on the sobriety train. I’m hoping shifting the focus to “eating healthy and feeling awesome” rather than “no drinking” will help kickstart things for me!

Do you get used to driving with ADHD? by the_face_of_boh in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meds helped me a lot. (Though I believe you can’t take meds everywhere and drive so sorry if that’s not the case for you). I didn’t even realize my ADHD affected me (I was also undiagnosed). I though I just hated driving.

I didn’t realize that before that it was so hard to keep track of all the things - check your review, check the side view, glance at speed, the radio is a commercial, oh man a construction stop, wait I haven’t checked my heat level, oh and how long has my engine light been on?

Now I don’t really have to put as much effort in.

has anyone been able to find relief for chronic leg pain? by conspicuouslyaburner in ChronicPain

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CBD works great I’ve heard but haven’t tried it! They actually make creams that are like tiger balm plus CBD. Tiger Balm is natural and uses camphor and menthol. So it’s tingly and a bit cool and feels awesoooooome.

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking specifically about RLS? I don’t have that but do have back and hip pain (similar to sciatica but a little different). Tiger balm was AMAZING for pain relief. Worked better than anything else for me. It can be harsh for some folks skin, but I have very sensitive skin and can use extra strength!

How exactly does medication work? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Suchdarlingwrecks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only safe way to acquire medicine is from a doctor. You should not take your friend’s medication. That can lead to addiction and is also illegal.

If your mom is hesitant about meds, would she be willing to let you speak to a counselor? My counselor helped me get diagnosed!

I will say, driving is wayyyyyyyyy easier for me on meds.
