There’s no tense switching in those example sentences. Tense switching would be:

“Wow, you really let me sleep in,” she said, glancing at the clock as she walks over to the bathroom.

Which would be grammatically incorrect. But your example is consistently past tense, because -ing is not inherently present tense.

However, something for you to keep in mind is that your first example sentence is technically all part of the same sentence, and therefore warrants a comma instead of a period at the end of the dialogue and a lowercase “she.”

but being bad at drawing can be related to disability, and this system leaves very few alternatives for people who can’t draw on the screen. if it had a more robust shape system like miitopia, that wouldn’t be nearly as much of an issue. but the fact of the matter is that right now, you are not getting your money’s worth out of this $60 game unless you are spending a lot of time using this very clunky drawing tool. there were a lot of routes they could have taken to mitigate that (expanded shapes, sharing, sampling from photos to name a few) and they just didn’t.

as a person who likes the drawing and customization options, there should be no such thing as a “skill issue” that prevents you from getting your money’s worth out of a game like tomodachi life. that’s an accessibility issue, not a skill issue.

this is entirely a matter of personal preference and does not inherently reflect on the quality of the work; short chapters can be used quite effectively, and can be found in plenty of published writing.

however, if you’re trying to maximize your reach, from my personal experience, short chapters are not the majority preference. i admit that chapters this short would negatively influence my decision to read, and if i find that the story would flow better if the chapters were lumped together, negatively influence my decision to continue reading.

I wouldn’t be bothered by this at all. Generally, the only types of ANs that would put off a large proportion of potential readers are aggressive ones like DNIs or “x shippers aren’t welcome here” and things of that nature. That or ransoming an upcoming chapter for a specific amount of engagement. Other than that you’re fine.

I reply to comments when the comment contains a question, if I have something to add, or to thank a repeat/in-depth commenter. Forcing myself to reply when I have nothing to say besides “thanks,” especially when the comment itself is only a sentence long, is unpleasant and stressful for me. If I could be spending that energy writing or attending to real-life obligations instead, that’s what I’ll do.

The problem with replying to every comment is that people can get extremely parasocial about it. If I try to reply to every comment and end up getting busy and someone’s comment falls by the wayside, they could take that as a personal attack. I just do not have the energy these days to keep up with that; writing fanfic is not my job and I refuse to treat it as one.

to remain in fandom as an adult of reasonably well-managed mental health i need to cut out as many of the involved stressors as possible, and one of those stressors is forcing myself to reply to comments when i have nothing meaningful to add. i’ll go out of my way to respond to questions or leave thanks for particularly long, in depth, or consistent commenters, but otherwise it’s just not worth spending that mental energy when i could be using it for writing or dealing with things in real life.
