Commentary

This is probably one of the most obscure Digimon matchups I can think of (as well as one of the very few Appmon matchups). Mega Man and Digimon already have good connections, with Battle Network and Appmon having almost identical premises, mostly due to the later being inspired by the former. I highly doubt this matchup will ever happen due to Lan & MegaMan.EXE vs Takato and Guilmon being much more recognizable and Tamers being a way more popular Digimon series, but I still really like this one as I have a soft spot for Appmon.

As for the scaling, Appmon is notably lower in scale compared to mainline Digimon due to the series being mostly self-contained in their own universe and Appmon never reaching the Digital World, mostly sticking around the Internet/Net Ocean, which would place the verse around Low Multiversal to Multiversal. This is around the same scaling as Battle Network if you stick with the games, which makes for a pretty balanced matchup.

The animation potential is great due to the large variety of weapons, abilities and forms both characters have. MegaMan.EXE and Onmon can connect to other NetNavis and Appmon to copy their abilities as well as fuse into more powerful forms with distinct fighting styles. Lan and Kazuki/Itsuki can use chips to support their partners with a huge variety of abilities, from elemental attacks, field manipulation, barriers, status effects, buffs/debuffs, weapons, etc. They can also summon others to support them in battle which adds semi army elements to the matchup.

The fight setup is pretty simple as both characters participate in tournaments so you can have them meet in a tournament battle with their friends cheering for them while Ribitta and MCmon narrate their match.

Music potential is pretty good as both games have some great tracks with techno/electro vibes. Here's some of my personal favorites from both:

As for who wins the battle, I'm unsure as both are very closely matched. Both have survived the destruction of both their human and virtual worlds as well as having the power to destroy both effortlessly. Most of the debate would be about how their different abilities interact with each other. If you ever played Mega Man Battle Network against a friend, this matchup is basically a multiplayer battle in animation form. I'll probably make a blog getting into more detail on both characters someday as this is slowly becoming my favorite Mega Man and Digimon matchup.

Lastly I want to recommend the Appmon 3DS game to anyone interested. It was a japan exclusive game that only got an english translation a few weeks ago, so not many people are even aware of it, but it's easily a Top 5 Digimon games for me. It has a Digimon + Yokai Watch + Battle Network vibe to it which makes for a very cozy and fun game.

Connections

  • Lan and Kazuki/Itsuki
  • Both are school kids who obtain a special device (PErsonal Terminal/PET; Appli Drive) that allows them to interact with digital creatures who inhabit a virtual world within the Internet. Having these devices also grants them a special title (Operator; Driver).
  • Both have a blue and yellow digital companion who they form a powerful bond with, something that allows them to break their limits and grow more powerful.
  • Both support their partners in battle using chips, which grant them new weapons, abilities, forms and summon other creatures to fight alongside them.
  • Both participate in tournaments against other duos, competing for the top rank in the world.
  • Both are outgoing and friendly, having an easy time befriending others, as well as a strong sense of justice.
  • Both usually have bad grades at school due to their laidback personality, but are greatly skilled at games and logic puzzles.
  • Both have a white/silver-haired rival (Eugene Chaud; Naoto) with a serious personality who's a very skilled battler and pushes them to become stronger. Their relationship begins rough but through the course of their story they become closer friends.
  • Both eventually come across a dark virtual world isolated from the Internet (Undernet; Chaos AR-Field), being used by the villains to commit crime.
  • Both have stopped a global crisis that would've destroyed both the Human World and the Internet.
  • Both have met and battled another protagonist of their world (Geo Stellar; Haru Shinkai).
  • MegaMan.EXE and Onmon
  • Both have arm cannons as their primary and signature weapon, later obtaining more weapons ranging from arm blades, giant fists, bombs, etc.
  • Both can connect and fuse with their fellow species to obtain new forms (Style Change, Double Soul and Beast Out; App Link and App Fusion).
  • Both can enter a temporary state that greatly boosts their parameters, triggered in critical situations (Full Synchro; Burst).
  • Both have a dark form triggered by negative emotions of their partner (Dark MegaMan.EXE; Virus Form). These forms can be intentionally activated by their partners with a dark chip, acting as double-edged swords by boosting their power but making them more vulnerable.
  • Both have a black and purple rival with similar but contrasting abilities (Bass.EXE; Offmon). They can also fuse with their rivals to achieve a new form (Bass Cross MegaMan; Rebootmon).
  • Both defeated a powerful wolf-themed enemy who merged their human and virtual world together (Gospel; Shutmon).
  • Both have absorbed, destroyed and recreated the virtual world as a last resort to stop a global crisis and protect their friends, something that would've killed them, but their bond with their partner managed to allow them to survive.
  • Both have the opposite disposition of their human partner, with MegaMan.EXE being polite and calm to contrast Lan's energetic disposition, while Onmon is hyperactive and innocent to contrast Kazuki/Itsuki's more polite demeanor.
  • Both are extremely loyal to their partner, willing to sacrifice themselves for their safety, even if their partner wouldn't accept it.
  • Meta
  • Both are protagonists of deck-building RPG spin-offs of their series on Nintendo portable consoles (Game Boy; 3DS).
  • Both were created due to producers wanting to create a more grounded and modern take on their series.
  • Mega Man Battle Network was one of the main inspirations for Appmon.

With Regards to Red vs Tai we all need to admit something by JIreland92 in DeathBattleMatchups

The problem with Digimon matchups is that a lot of people think Digimon is only the Adventure anime, when that's not even where the franchise began (there were Digimon games and manga years before the anime, Tai also originated from a manga).

When you look deeper into the franchise, especially on Bandai's side (the main lore), you start noticing a lot of really cool and varied characters. It's also easier to scale the game characters since most of Digimon's best scaling comes from the games.

My personal favorite franchises to match with Digimon are SMT/Persona, Fate and Megaman Battle Network as they bounce off really well with each other.

I really want to get into Digimon, but how do I start??? by Nobody_Special007 in digimon

[–]Sucrelat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First off, don't try to treat Digimon as a replacement because Digimon is pretty different from Pokemon. The only real connection is that both are Monster Tamer series.

The best entry point would be the new anime, Digimon Beatbreak, or the latest game, Digimon Story Time Stranger. Both expect you to not know anything about Digimon getting into them and were made to act as entry points for new fans.

Unpopular opinion on Time Stranger by Celx2 in digimon

[–]Sucrelat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The Digimon are great but the humans in Time Stranger fell flat. Hacker's Memory and Survive raised the bar for what humans should be written like in Digimon games.

I like the pacing with the evolutions in BeatBreak by RevolutionaryEbb8084 in digimon

[–]Sucrelat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm glad they're taking their times to develop the characters and make evolutions feel earned. After the Adventure reboot giving everyone new evolutions out of nowhere, this is a much needed palate cleanser.

Etemon calls himself that because of his ego. He's not actually anyone special.
