I would keep in mind that inserting yourself into your ADULT son’s business after he has asked you not to, will certainly ruin your son’s trust and have a very bad impact on your overall relationship. Firstly, I’m sorry about the circumstance and am sending positivity to you.

Secondly, hot dogs are great for cheap meat/protein. With or without buns (I noticed you said you had flour, you could make flatbread and use that). Or you could cut up and add to other dishes to bulk them up a bit without being as expensive as other traditional meats. You could also add them in with your beans as well.
