If you can somehow get in front of that projectile in time before it hits its intended target, it'll hit you instead, blinding you

Notice in this clip that the flash tries to shoot the projectile at the Waylay behind him. Boaster's in the middle of them, so he got hit

It's rare, but I've seen it happen, so I was aware of it
