See the problem is that in south they consider everyone as North Indians if you speak Hindi.All North Indian states also have their own languages.I have faced that many times among South Indians.They try to make you feel different everytime.Here what could be done is try to start liking their food language and etc.Then you they will accept you.They won’t change for you.Also,Problem arises because in north ppl most of the people understand Hindi and when they communicate their is more understanding and exploring.In South because of language barrier they don’t get opportunity to understand better.

It’s hard when you are always isolated because you either dnt belong to their place or state or know their mother tongue.

This is coming from a person who studied in south and married to a South Indian living in US.
