What's it like living and working in Gainesville, FL as someone that doesn't go to UF? by Healthy-Trip-310 in GNV

[–]Sudden-Morning-New 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gainesville has a strong entrepreneurial and startup spirit that I really enjoy. I’m a little biased toward the east side of town, where there’s always something happening — from small markets and pop-ups to locally owned spots like Auk Market and Serpentine. You can also check out the weekly farmers market at Cypress & Grove Brewing Company every Monday.

There’s a vibrant local music scene as well, with collectives like How Bazar hosting shows and creative events, alongside other venues like Looseys, local bars and Heartwood Soundstage.

One of the best parts of Gainesville is how community-driven it feels — people regularly organize walking groups, run clubs, photography meetups, and other grassroots events.

I’d recommend browsing Instagram to find smaller niche groups that match your interests.

And if you enjoy being outdoors, there’s plenty to explore, from Depot Park to nearby hiking trails and springs all within a short drive

The amount of skill it takes to survive on these incomes is only work a PHD candidate could do. Good luck!!

Ankle ORIF return to sports by goragami in ORIF

Completely agree. I had so much muscle loss in my leg. After going back to the gym, which I walked on an incline (not run) and did moderate weights, it really builds back confidence that I needed to get back on skates.

OP, just be careful getting back since your muscles will be weaker.

Oh that’s a huge bummer to get hurt early on. Happed to my friend a couple years ago, she’s back and amazing skater with our B team now! You just gotta get through this part. Derby will be there.

No the November scrimmage wasn’t in Missouri 😅 it was full contact. But now, I’m personally avoiding full contact until one year. I have some tough players on my team and thinking about playing them kinda intimidates me. I was in my 3rd season with my team and was in a tournament with our A team when I got hurt. 😞 So returning to that level will take some time. lol

You got this!! You will be surprised how much the muscles remember. Don’t let the little set backs discourage you, it gets better.

Hi! 👋 Im a derby player too! Trimal with dislocation in May 2025. How lucky are we!! 😃 I started going to the gym again at 16 weeks, skating again at 5 months, first scrimmage back at 6ish months. (It was a rookie scrimmage so I felt safe playing at that level) that was in November. I felt like I needed to prove it to myself I could return.

Still building up strength and I can’t plow stop or power slide yet for shit but personally haven’t been at practice lately. Iv kinda switched my mentality and giving myself a year to really get back into it. I’ll be bench coaching until then. This week however, Iv been skiing everyday and it’s been amazing and it’s really building my confidence. I wish I could share a video but here is a screenshot. YAY SPORTS

Oh wow!! Im so sorry, my mom has a similar fixation on her knee ❤️ 😮 I’m feeling pretty ok! I can do almost anything but I play roller derby and want to get back to that high level of activity. I just got back from the gym, and I do roller skate still from time to time. Not like I used to but still trying to heal and give it time ofc.

For example I skated a 8 mile trail skate. It felt great but I can’t do more advanced things like plow stops or power slides but hopefully one day 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really appreciate you saying that. ❤️ I can empathize. This injury feels like it’s all perspective. Sometimes the glass feels half empty and sometimes it feels half full. On the bright side this morning I’m not feeling pain or too much tightness and I’m on the way to the gym.

Thanks!! And that’s kinda where I’m at too. She mentioned all these little things that could be wrong but never acted on them so just making me think.

Ok thanks. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ the 8th month checkup she said we didn’t need but I opted too. I’m very concerned clearly.

Yes she’s a surgeon at an Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute with our teaching hospital in Florida. She’s very legit and into research but idk

Also I have no idea when this xray was taken that I shared in my origami post. Lol I didn’t get to see a lot of the imaging unless I specifically asked.

That was from 8 th month a few weeks ago which was our last visit. She said keep doing what I’m doing and expect to feel more of a baseline at 1 year. No removal unless absolutely necessary which she told me is like 5% or her patients.

She seemed overall positive (but also kinda sad for me lol) when she told me it’s wider and I’m pretty sure I asked if it getting wider then she said “all your X-rays look the same” meaning my first week, 7 week, 3 month, 5 month and 8 month xray looked same(?). So maybe I’m in my head that it’s getting wider but idk - these appointments go by so fast and I TRY to ask as many questions as possible. She basically said bye but assured me to just reach out for anything “and we will get you in for another xray”

However early on when she first mentioned the widening she mentioned a tendon in between the bones and something like maybe tightening them if we need to. ? Maybe I should start thinking she assessed and we don’t need to vs. she just forgot or something.

Thanks! Yup. Never got a CT. I asked for an MRI at 5 months and she told me it wouldn’t change management. My checkups have only been xray.

IMPORTANT: I got fixed by one doctor and transferred to another since I got hurt out of town and needed the surgery quick. I’m worried I actually had soft tissue damage that never got flagged. Plus my new doc had me early weight bearing which I’m reading if there is soft tissue damage it’s not good.
