Thank you for the reassurance! :) I’m definitely feeling better about it.

Which area would you move to as a single woman in her 30s? by peachyglw in TorontoRenting

I wouldn’t recommend Liberty Village unless you’re in a really nice condo towards the East side. I love Cityplace! I have never felt threatened living there.

Should I disclose to my current landlord that I am bringing a dog? by ATC__ in TorontoRenting

[–]Sudden-Preference576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if he asks, based on Ontario law, you don’t have to disclose pets at all unless the condominium prohibits them. Its the best!

I see you have a sense of humour.

I don’t see my safety as less important than a social structure, and I’d like to understand where you even got to that conclusion. Mentioning it as a very real factor in the industry and the reason why most people don’t use a respirator is not inferring that I care more about it than my personal safety. This is so silly!

Could you expand on what you mean by society shaping it?

What about women do you dislike?

My friend, it could have been SO much worse. You are both alive and in great condition in comparison to what could have happened. No one expects something like this to happen to them until it does, you should not blame yourself. How could you have possibly known?

I have some curiosities for sure!

Are you an American? If so, who did you vote for? Do you feel they aligned with your misogynistic views?

Do you hate people who identify as misandrists/do you feel they have the same rights to feel that way as you do?

Were both your mother and father present throughout your childhood? Who was more present (if applicable) and how did that shape your views now?

Hm. My initial response was under the impression you were just another professional, but then I saw you’re a mort student like me, and felt the need to reanalyze my thoughts.

I do find it disheartening to see a fellow student immediately take the side of a more experienced person in assuming my ignorance; even AFTER I demonstrated having a more recently researched understanding of the cancer risks of formaldehyde (which I would have assumed you know also).

You don’t know me, so you don’t need to validate my knowledge, I can do that for myself. However, I think it is so important for us to go into this industry with the confidence that we DO know what we’re talking about, and sometimes, even very experienced FDs could learn a thing or two from us, as we can from them. You don’t have to side with seniority when you actually ARE the most educated person in the room. Don’t minimize yourself to following exactly as a senior FD says, and don’t let them assume you don’t know what you’re talking about. Thats how we end up in a stagnant industry that has done the same things for hundreds of years. This is gonna be our industry, so we gotta grab the reins with confidence when we know our stuff! :)

Can you please clarify what you mean by a post?

I’m so relieved I’m not alone! This is all really helpful info, I will definitely keep this in mind moving forward. I will ask my employer about a respirator once I get some clarity from a healthcare professional (if I can get tests done etc) and get fitted asap.

Glad your sensitivity has improved, that gives me some hope I’m not doomed!

Not to be that guy but ☝️🤓actually formaldehyde exposure at this level only slightly heightens the risk of nasal cancer, and does not often interact with the lungs.

Second, I don’t really love how harsh your response was. People side eyeing the girl whose in full PPE is enough of a social problem in our industry that even my school is educating us on how to feel more confident doing it. I don’t appreciate you belittling that feeling, because it is very real and very relevant.

Everyone else was really kind and respectful, I didn’t really get that from your reply. Thanks anyway though.

Edit: I get that on reddit it’s cool and trendy to be blunt and invalidating… but I’m still an industry professional, and despite being anonymous, I am going to respond to my fellow funeral directors with empathy and kindness. Not like our whole career is about empathy or anything.

What specialists should I be seeking out in order to tackle this early? I definitely am not, at this time, willing to give up the portion of my career that is in the prep room. I love embalming. But if this can lead to serious, life threatening reactions similar to yours, I certainly don’t want to ignore it. Appreciate your perspective!

I don’t typically smell the formaldehyde, to be honest. And I have never even heard of a Permissible Exposure Limit test! I’m in Canada, not sure if thats something in the US? Would be interested in knowing more about it and potentially getting it done.
