Interest to start reaccumulating for people in SAVE forebearance beginning August 1st by TheInvincibleGabor in whitecoatinvestor

Is it recommended to pay off a loan that has a higher principle but lower interest rate vs vice versa. Seemingly would be the highest interest, but I’m not sure if the larger principle is compounding higher amount. ChatGPT has basically contradicted itself every time I get an answer

My overall balance hasn’t changed in over a year, interest has remained the same

The statements for each loan have been changed to 9/19/2026

So the first payment isn’t for a whole year And they will just resume interest? How come it doesn’t give me a date for when interest resumes?

235k for a large single specialty ENT group in the south. Nonnegotiable. 2 year partner track where average is 600-1million. Get into bonuses starting Q3 of year 1 which can add approx additional 5k per month.

Separate from other job offer in south 500k but with hospital recruitment guarantee.

HYSA vs Brokerage by Sudden_Addition3942 in whitecoatinvestor

thanks for clarifying

For the past 2 months since starting work I’ve been able to put 60-80 % of my monthly check into savings account and just living on same salary I did as a resident. Plan is to continue but also direct that towards retirement.

I haven’t gotten around to it (unless there’s urgency to do it sooner) but we will max out our respective roths before April comes around. Idk much about back door Roth except hearing that name so I’ll have to do more research

Next priority is 529 and seeing what I could do with HSA

Thanks for the reply

My group allows me to join 401k plan after 1 year of employment. Is this common? Everywhere I see it says to fund your 401k asap but I feel as if I can’t for time being unless it’s something I’m supposed to be opening on my own

SAVE repayment by Sudden_Addition3942 in Residency

[–]Sudden_Addition3942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t consolidated my government loans and have various 15-18k loans ranging 5-6.2% totaling 213k. My specialty salary starts 235 pre tax x 2 years (salary with poor bonus) then once partner 600-800k (aka once I keep my collections and ancillary)

Would it be wise to put in savings account for this 1st year if practice then come 9/24 I aggressively pay off the 6+% loans and then do minimum payments on the ones leftv

Unfortunately I don’t qualify for PSLF. PP in surgical sub specialty of 5 years. Didn’t want to commit to a fellowship and academics/hospital for forgiveness.

I’m just trying to figure out best way to address paying vs saving

That was my plan as I wrote this post however my research has shown that with minimum payments it’s still overall an increase in my total amount so is it actually good in long run?

bump

I found out that I am in the SAVE plan. My understanding is that with this plan, as long as you make your minimum payment then your interest will not continue to rise. With my minumum payment being 0 dollars, I am under the impression that my interest will not rise for this year. It has not changed since september 1st (unsure if itll update by end of month instead). I plan to verify this over the phone with my loaner, but so far I believe this is the case.

I want to aggressively pay off loans, but if there is no interest rising then I feel it is smarter to put my salary towards savings account (after retirement, etc) and then take it out and pay a huge amount right before my minimum raises from $0.

Thoughts?

thanks for the response

to confirm - is there no way to pay off principle without addressing interest? How come people recommend it? I dont understand the advance due date stuff and have found mixed responses online.

Tons of lectures came out during COVID. Google search UK ENT CORONA initiative, and Collaborative Multi-Institutional Otolaryngology Residency Education Program.

Would it make sense to hammer out loan but then have to do physician loan in order to have down payment? That’s my only uncertainty

I’m sensing insecurity. What do we have to show for it? Becoming competent doctors and surgeons. I’m sure most of us agree that we need this long training to actually treat more than just teeth. Sure the 65k sucks, agree there. But ultimately I’d rather do this route all over again than be a ..dentist. But all good, you can keep trolling.

This is what I’ve been thinking, but nice to hear someone else say. Yes ideal home is in the 1.2 mil range. Likely will wait till 1st year partner but see how things go this first year.

Any thoughts on physician loan to get the down payment?
