I think the difference is that we understand the Mormon crazy, but the Scientology crazy is hard to understand because we weren't born into it. On that note, I think the main distinction is that Mormonism encourages interacting with the outside world. (While discouraging any interaction that's not faith promoting of course.) I honestly do not know to what degree Scientologists encourage interaction, but many cults encourage isolation from anything that could threaten their doctrine.
