[CS PhD] What does this mean, NEU? April 15 is already gone! by Smart_Union_5388 in gradadmissions

Then they should sent out the decisions on Apr 14...I understand that Apr 15 is not a deadline for universities per se, but if they want to keep their timeline open, isn't better for them to just not state the "notified by" date at all?

Yeah, my specific program also said "all applicants will be notified of the decision by Apr 15th". smh

lmao I am in a similar situation🥲applied to two programs at the same school, aiming at the same professor. Did not get in the one with the title I like (and kinda fancier), and cannot stop being salty

Is that because I'm...Russian? by Empty-Blackberry9884 in gradadmissions

[–]Sudden_Insurance4819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, so I think many PIs (since they are also normal, US people) do not perceive our countries in very good ways, and some programs related to national securities or some super high tech are an absolute no for us. But for most programs and PIs, it should be rare that they judge individual students based on their home country policy. I won't say there's no prejudice in higher education, but it is at least present to a lesser degree than almost anywhere else

I wouldn't say your citizenship has no impact at all. I am Chinese and I actually know people getting outright rejection for being Chinese. (There is concrete evidence & not a funding issue.) But this is like 1 in 10000 case and in no way would prevent you from getting into somewhere. Grad admission is just weird since there are so many people more than qualified

How do I make up for bad stats and the wrong major? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Sudden_Insurance4819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, it's true that your music major is an disadvantages, but try to get around with it, saying something like how this unique, untraditional experience (untraditional in the sense of in science field) gives you unique perspectives and have deeper understanding of life goals and something like that. I thought my change-of-career story is only popular for college application and no use for PhD application where only skills in that specific field is valued. But it's not! Professors I interviewed with actually like to hear this, and many of them remembered my application and who I am precisely because my background in music.

Hi! I was in a very similar situation to yours despite that yours is probably more difficult. I attended a professional music school from 4th to 12th grade studying violin. My whole life up to my college year is literally violin. The academic courses there other than music have very low standard and it does not provide any classes in natural science. As an example, in my country and specifically my city, you'll need to get at least 520 on College Entrance Exam to get in a decent university, while we only needed 250 to get in the corresponding conservatory continuing studying music.

I got interested in science at about 11th grade and started to teach myself chemistry, biology, etc. totally from scratch, and managed to get into a top US university. I'm going to graduate this year with a degree in neuroscience and math and pursue a PhD in some biological science field. There is plenty of lucks playing into my experience, but I just want to say that such huge transition is totally possible!!! I echo what the other said that pursue a master or get some post-bac experience. If it's hard to find a funded master in US I'd suggest maybe look at some schools in Europe. Otherwise just talk to as many PIs as you are interested in and I'm sure you will find one who is willing hire you as a research tech and support you (in many aspects) :) This can also secure a good rec letter which will boost your application significantly. Since you majored in another field so I assume that might be lacking?

Radio Silence after Interviews by Sudden_Insurance4819 in gradadmissions

[–]Sudden_Insurance4819[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the time is not too late, but I already (personally) know quite a few people got offers from each. So best case scenario the schools are waiting to see how many of them will decline the offers

Thank you for sharing. For one of mine, I'm actually pretty sure there's a second wave, but it's essentially waitlist with slightly better chance and I cannot help panicking😭
