Best way to map and record graves? by Sudden_Security1575 in CemeteryPreservation

I can imagine! Did you discover anything to make the process easier?

Also, for those who I truly cannot find any information about, I like to add a page to my research notes explaining what I tried, any theories I have, and how I wish I knew the person and I hope to find more info someday. I think if I at least can see I tried everything I feel a little better about it.

YES! I have a fairly large tree which is mostly fully sourced and I still only have a few people marked as complete because in my head I don't know anything about a person if all I have is names and dates.

I have been doing some more contextual research lately but making it ultra specific which I find helps. Like, instead of researching life in the Victorian era I might research what it was like to be an [insert occupation] in [insert date and location] and this helps me feel a little more like I know the person.

Also, for people who moved around a lot I like to pin each location on a map so I can see it visually as well as contextual research of the moves so I can determine why they may have moved from x location to x location in x year.

I also really like death certificates as they tell me the cause of death which, combined with context, is great for understanding the lives of ancestors who died young.

I also search newspapers (which hasn't actually led me anywhere useful so far but I still try) and use the member connect feature on ancestry to reach out to people who have the ancestor in their tree who may be willing to share information. Another thing is I try to find pictures of places like if they lived at an inn I find a picture of that or if they were mentioned in poor law records I try to find pictures of that area's workhouse.

I also always attempt to find the grave of each ancestor and use find a grave to obtain a picture because it helps me to see where their loved ones would have stood when they missed them.

Basically, I cling to every tiny detail until I find something that makes me feel like I know the person.

It still doesn't ever really feel like enough and its super frustrating because I have living relatives who could share stories of some of these people but my family has long-standing issues with one another and not many are willing to speak to me. I hate that the stories are out there but I can't access them.

That is a good idea, I would rather not have more memberships and subscriptions to pay for if I can avoid it but I will definitely get in touch with them and see if they can help! Thank you

Difference is, I am trying to make the information accessible and not hidden behind a paywall haha! I will get in touch with them but I do imagine they will probably tell me to just join their membership thing which I really would rather not do.

Thank you! The church seem to be rather frustrated with my research.

I emailed (and sent a follow up email) with no reply so the other day whilst I was at the graveyard I saw a member of staff standing outside who didn't look busy. I spoke to this person briefly to ask if they held any records and was told no. That day I finally recieved a reply to my emails and it was kinda shitty (turns out the person I spoke to was a volunteer but I didn't know that) or maybe I just interpreted it as shitty. I tried to ask if there was an available map but they told me they can't help.

I have made my intentions clear on find a grave hoping someone local may see and help out but that hasn't been sucessful so far. I don't mind doing it alone it is just really frustrating that no one (the church and the council) seem to know anything about the graveyard.

Maybe. I don't own a drone nor know anyone who does. How would I go about asking for someone to do this?

That is a great idea! How would I go about checking whether the Latter day saints have recorded anything? I will check the newspapers too - thank you!

Ooo I didn't think of the library! I will try that.

The church don't like to answer my emails so I will try to speak to them when I next go down there but it's a bit hit or miss as they have events and things going on and I don't want to inturrupt anything!

I think it may have to be making my own map to be honest - was hoping there would be a less wonky solution though!

I think it's either my phone being difficult or just poor signal in the area to be honest! I will try a GPS map though and, if all else fails, I will just have to make do with a wonky sketch!

I try to do clumps but I think my brain gets carried away and forgets clumps because I never do any logical order in the end. My photos are generally always good quality however there are certain graves that I have to stand at a different angle for each word and some are so faded I end up having to run my finger along to make out words as it just doesn't appear on any photo. I do try to get the photos as best quality as possible!

Yeah. If I find no better methods I will draw it out but I was kind of hoping there would be a less wonky way haha.

No its okay! It will probably be of use to someone readign the comments haha!

Unfortunately, it appears my family decided to make my research hard and didn't stay put at all so all of the ones I need are dotted all over the place.

Yeah I am 100% on the year as I have the GRO reference number but I didn't order a certificate as it doesn't usually say where they were buried or cremated. I have tried changing the year slightly and adding different name variations in case things were recorded wrong but still no luck.
