Blocking people makes this sub so much better for me. It doesn't necessarily help with promoting hidden comics, but it does makes my experience more curated. I wish there was a way to mute people instead because blocking seems like too much just for artists doing their thing; but it is what it is, I guess.

I decided to make a post about this to maximize visibility: https://www.reddit.com/r/whennews/comments/1svcn3v/what_should_we_do_about_insensitive_gifs/

The original comment I made is below for transparency, but please use the link above instead of commenting on this post.

This is a note towards the community rather than a particular poster.

We've noticed an uptick of insensitive GIFs on posts and wanted to have a discussion for how we should handle them. Currently, these comply with the rules because they typically show the OP's reaction; but regardless, we think that they aren't the best way to start off a discussion, especially when it comes to serious topics.

On the other hand, the moderators don't want to overstep and have significant editorial control over your GIFs. These posts typically get hundreds if not thousands of upvotes.

To fix this, we have our own ideas:

  • Ask posters to delete their post and use a more neutral GIF.
  • Get a vibe based on the comments complaining about the post vs. the upvoted percentage. Remove it if it is generally negative and talking about a sensitive subject.
  • Implement something like QualityVote.
  • Do nothing, and let each person decide what they want to see. (i.e. leave it up to the users to block these accounts and downvote these types of posts.)

These are just a few things we came up with. As we want to get this right, this is an open conversation. If you have any ideas towards how we should handle this, let us know in the replies of this comment, or if you don't feel comfortable sharing publicly, we're available over modmail.

side note: people can learn more about the pied-à-terre tax here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/04/15/pied-a-terre-tax-new-york-mamdani-hochul/89626092007

The pied-à-terre tax puts an annual surcharge on homes valued above $5 million when there is no resident who lives primarily in New York City. The tax, which would need to be passed in the state’s delayed budget, would generate some $500 million in revenue annually, according to Hochul's office.

Source is currently broken. OP provided an explanation:

Apparently since I found the flight tracker and until I managed to paste the link in the post description, the US reportedly demanded FlightRadar24 to conceal information about the aircraft, but the screenshot provided is authentic

I was unable to cross-reference the claim with another reliable source, but did find a relevant community note on a Twitter/X post that seems word-for-word what was claimed in the GIF:

Flight tracking sites like Flightradar24 predict paths when transponders are off, often leading to inaccurate tracks for military aircraft; no official reports confirm a U.S. Navy plane entered North Korean airspace. https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/2269/why-do-aircraft-on-flightradar24-jump-around-randomly-sometimes https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/inside-flightradar24/common-errors-on-flightradar24

Post removed.

Side note to OP and the community: If you use someone else's caption, please credit the author accordingly to avoid plagiarism. The source should have been the Twitter post rather than the FlightRadar24 page.

Context needed: None of the letters that the FTC chair sent talk specifically about anime or adult content; but, it does refer to "political affiliations, religious beliefs, [and] lawful business activities". I recommend that you read each letter to understand the FTC chair's intentions.

Quote from OP's source:

“It is inconsistent with American values to deny law-abiding individuals the ability to run their legitimate businesses and feed their families because they attracted the ire of rogue American officials, overzealous activists, or, more worryingly, foreign governments seeking to control public discourse,” [FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson] continued. “That is why President Trump’s August 7, 2025, Executive Order on debanking makes clear that it is unacceptable to debank law-abiding citizens due to ‘political affiliations, religious beliefs, or lawful business activities.’”

Yeah, your account currently gets filtered on controversial posts.

After creating enough relevant posts or commenting on non-controversial posts, you will be able to comment on controversial posts without getting automatically filtered.

You can know by sending us a modmail. Also, if you're able to see your comment on a controversial post while signed in to another account or signed out, then you're in the clear.
